« on: March 17, 2009, 12:35:29 PM »

source is plugged in lan, output computer is wireless running dlink dwl g510, both drivers updated. wireless signal 4/5. both running vista 32bit.

Play arount with the Antenna position, this can really affect connection quality. And ideal position is also different on every router.
Also, are you connection with N or G?

Are you multicasting - i.e. more than one computer can pick up a stream available on the network?

On the 655 - under advanced - advanced network - enable multicast

How are you streaming the video through the router using what program?  For instance are you broadcasting it using a streaming program like VLC or MPC? Or are you just playing over the network from the host to the output computer using Media Player for instance?

I had all kinds of streaming problems with Vista on the 655.  Have you throttled MMCCS in vista registry? I assume you have installed SP1. Try 40 to 60 throttle to see what happens. MMCCS cripples the machine network traffic, without SP1, and would slow everything down on a vista machine realtive to other LAN traffic while streaming.  I finally gave up on Vista and went back to XP.

I also found I had to enable jumbo frames on the onboard realtek NICs to stream video smoothly through the 655.  I can now stream 15 Mbps over the 655 (wired) using VLC (VideoLan).

Just some ideas...

thanks for the help!

I am playing files from the source computer directly, sorry no idea about streaming, as it worked with no problem at all on my linksys 54g router, I assume I don't have to do any adjustments on the computer side?

I use media player classic to play the files, all files worked fine with no problem before.

If I see 4/5 on signal does that mean its good enough?

using G

Just to see if I have it straight, you are running MPC on the wireless PC and opening a file from the PC connected to the 655 on the lan?

On my wired lan I just played back both a standard def and H.264 movie using MPC over the 655.  No problem there.

What firmware are you running on the router?

In the DIR655 try forcing the wireless speed to 54 Mbps G only to match your PCI card.  Also do a scan on the wireless PC and see what channels are not being used and force the 655 to that instead of auto.  Turn off WISH.  Do one after the other and see if anything changes.

If not, what kind of network interface card (NIC) do you have on the lan pc - onboard or pci card?  On the NIC, what is the speed set to - auto?  Are jumbo frames enabled?

What quality of video? I can play a stream up to about 12Mbs using N and about 6Mbs with G. I personally think I should be able to stream a lot more using N concidering a stable connection @ about 270Mbit. But oh well.

I can only transfer a file at 1.1MB/s from two PCs on the LAN, both are connected via 802.11n and both at 300mbps perfect connection. :(

Still better than the crappy 350KB/s I got with 802.11g using a Linksys router.

I transferred a 6GB file by the way and took the average.

Pretty sad as I can get 3MB/s from the net!

thanks for the reply, that is correct, I am not running anything HD.

My hardware version is A3, using firmware 1.21

how do i do a scan on the wireless PC and see what channels are not being used?

LAN pc using onboard, device says Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 pci-e controller, its a asus motherboard.
How do I check speed and jumbo frames?

thanks!

Try VideoLan instead of MPC.  If your PC connects to the 655 and you can get to the net, then MPC is the problem.  Use VideoLan.
