Recommend me a 2TB HDD
« on: March 24, 2012, 03:58:22 AM »

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a suitable 2TB HDD that I can setup as a RAID 1 with my DNS-323.

I've spotted the WD20EARX however I'm read (from a post back in 2009 on another forum) that:

"The DNS323 does not support WD 4K sector drives like the later 2TB WD20EARS and WD20EARX without the use of beta firmware."

Has anyone had any success with this drive or has a more recent firmware resolved this issue?

Another option I've seen is the HD204UI - I'm guessing based on this thread/post that is would be a viable HDD solution or does anyone else have any recommendations for 2TB drives?

Firmware 1.10 is no longer in beta.  I have WD10EARS drives that were formatted using FW 1.10 in operation.  I also have the older WD20EADS working with FW 1.09.  You should be fine with WD20EARS drives and firmware 1.10.

Very helpful, thanks jhtopping!

Would I be correct in understanding the WD20EARX should also therefore work with the firmware 1.10 - if anyone can confirm this, that'd be appreciated.

In addition can anyone confirm the HD204UI (as I'm actually starting to favour this drive... I think).

Thanks

Based on the following, http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf, it appears the WD20EARX drives will work.

Yer i've done some reading in the mean time and it looks like it will (although previous versions did have some RAID issues and drive swapping allocations (although this might be rememdied with the most recent firmware.

So that's one of my two potentials ticked... so now I just need to do some reading on that Samsung HDD (HD204UI) - ultimately they are around the same price so the question is;

WD vs Samsung HDD's - which are more reliable?

I have a WD20EARS and WD20EADS in the same DNS323 box.  They were formatted on firmware 1.10 a couple months back.

I've been running the EADS drive for almost 4 years now and the EARS for over a year with no problem on firmware 1.09 and now 1.10.

Hi guys,

...or does anyone else have any recommendations for 2TB drives?

I've been using the Seagate ST32000542AS on firmware 1.09 for a while now without issue.

I probably just jinxed myself...
