New to DLink
« on: March 24, 2012, 08:42:17 AM »

Hello, Just purchased two DIR-655's to spread the WiFi around the whole house.  I realize now that the 655 is considered "older" when it comes to technology but I am really not using these for anything other than full coverage of our house.  I am just looking for any recommendation people may be able to offer as to how to get the best out of these.  I'll post my current setup at the end of the post.
I have been digging around on here and have followed the suggestions found here.  Same SSID everywhere so that the clients will see it one big network.  Different channels so that there is no interference.  No security enabled. (I am in the boonies, no neighbors and I have walked all the way out to the road with my laptop.  You can't even see the network) My guess is that the clients will automatically switch to the AP with the strongest signal correct?  Does anyone know of a utility that can tell me which AP I am connected to?

I am running a Windows 2008 domain here in my house with the server performing DHCP and DNS functions.

If your using the 655s as APs, then just turn off all features like SPI, WISH, Protected WiFi, WLAN Partition and any filtering. Let your host router do all the management and DHCP reservations and such.
As long as each AP is set manually on a different channel, you can run the same SSID name.
One way I think you can check to see what 655 your connected to is to log into each of the 655 web page and check the Status/Wireless page. There you should see which one your connected too.
Time can't be acquired using the NTP function as it depends on the WAN connection.

Enjoy.
