Wireless-g versus wireless-n?
« on: March 26, 2012, 06:40:35 PM »

Today I replaced DSL with 15Mbps cable modem service and it's great.

However, my DIR-655, when in wireless-n mode, doesn't yield anywhere near max speeds during speed tests.  When I switch to wireless-g only, the router's wireless throughput to the computer is excellent.  The router and modem are on the main floor of the building and I'm in the basement via wireless; therefore, there's a thick floor for the signal to traverse.  For some reason, wireless-g just works better than wireless-n.  I haven't yet done a hard-reset on the modem and start from scratch, though I will someday try that.

Question: Is wireless-g sometimes better than wireless-n?  I've always heard that wireless-n is the best but I'm not certain of that.  Wireless-n did work well at DSL speeds but not cable modem speeds.  I would like to acquire some feedback on this topic.

Thank you and regards from Mark KF8RV.

Its preferred to have the router and devices on the same level. Having a building materials can effect wifi connections and performance. Also testing wireless speed test isn't reliable as many factors can effect good results. why it's only preferred to speed test wired connections.

It isn't easy for me to re-locate the router to the same level since it would require drilling an extra hole or two.  In addition to the basement ceiling, the router is atop of a steel desk.  The DIR-655 suprisingly does an outstanding job which the reason I bought it is its range and its three antennas.  The signal strength is fine in the basement and so is my computer's signal to the router.  It's a fine router.

I just thought that there was perhaps a benefit from wireless-g under certain conditions.  My wireless printer is wireless-g; therefore, the best that I am able to do is g & n in the router's setting.  For the time being I like g, even though I'll again try n in the coming days.

You may want to check out a AP or power extender that runs thru the 110v.

Now to somewhat off the topic.  My cable modem is the Motorola SB6121.  It's working in spite of the Link State light always blinking - probably normal for this modem since other persons have commented upon it in elsewhere.  When the Link light blinks, the globe light blinks on the DIR-655 which I thought it to mean internet activity, though I'm not sure of that.  If so, it's always communicating with the ISP or the router.  Hmmm...  I'm just somewhat confused by the new blinking pattern.  Also, does the DIR-655 always remain in communication with its wireless clients via small data packets?  It seems there's very slight activity when idle.  I'm just wanting to make sure that everything is fine before I start making a mountain out of mole hill.

Yes these are the operation of the lights on the modem and router. Any questions on how the lights are supposed to act, please refer to the manuals for each. The SB 6 series are great modems. I'm on the 6180 now.

Devices and probably the router do keep in contact like cell phones do, they'll ping each other to make sure the device is in range, hasn't shut off or gone else where.

Enjoy your set up man. Enjoy.

Thanks.

I've never heard of the 6180 model.  I bought my cable modem from Best Buy and at the time I thought that it was Motorola's best.

It is the best. Only differences is the 21 bonds at 4 and and down, the 80 bonds at 8. If the ISPs support it. Enjoy it now.  ;)

Back to the initial topic.

I had had these disabled in Advanced Wireless: WMM and Short GI.

I enabled each of the said parameters and the DIR-655 is once more working outstandingly in the wireless-n mode.
