I am trying to transfer a 3.5 gigi file to the DNS-321 from my Windows XP machine. The transfer stalled ... it always does on large file transfers. When I try to delete that file, it says the file is in use.

What is the problem here and how do I fix it?

The problem is most likely caused by your network itself - it's fairly common on networks tha thave high levels of errors.

You haven't told us about the network, is it wireless, is it wired, is it 100mbit, does it use a hub, does it use a switch, is it gigabit, did you make the cables yourself?

What can you tell us?

Thanks for telling me what you need. Obviously, I'm a big ugly noob. 

The DNS-321 is wired into a 4-port Netgear Rangemax (WPN824) Wireless router. My PC is wired to the router, and I have some Apple laptops that hook in wireless. (Obviously, each computer detects the DNS.) It's about as basic a setup as a noob can manage, I guess. Just straight out of the box.

Does G/MIMO 108 Mbps offer you any needed info?

(By the way: I've discovered that the DNS simply needs time for it to delete a large file. I guess it is still processing the file, so the file is being used. That portion of my crying is solved.)

Do you get the problem from the wired computer, the wireless laptops or all of them?

Right now, it's just the wired computer ... an XP machine. But then, I don't have huge files to transfer from the wireless computer. I did transfer a 1.75 gig files from the wireless, but the wired went up to 2.5 gig before giving the error. I'll have to transfer a file using an external drive ... but right now it is being used.

The second time I tried to transfer the same file, the transfer went longer. At the time though, I was continually accessing the DNS drive by opening files. I was doing it on purpose to see if actively engaging the DNS would keep the network connection alive. When I stopped doing that, the transfer died shortly after. That might be coincidence, but it makes me think the device times out or something.

The first day I got it, I backed up 4 gigs of information at once. The same stall happened. I was able to get around it by transferring folders one at a time. It's crazy that it will just stall. I only have one drive in the DNS ... a 1T Western Digital drive with power save.

I have contacted DLink support, have the latest firmware installed, and am just waiting.

In the meantime, I'll get a large file to my Mac and try to upload it wirelessly ... and let you know. But don't forget about me! But I wonder if it would be easier to go buy a Dlink router and see if it takes care of itself!

It should not, as you say, just stall.

Now - it's more common to see this type of problem over wireless than it is wired - in fact, I've only seen it on wireless, but since I know what causes it, it's not impossible to see it on wired, just unlikely.

Let me know what happens when you try the transfer wirelessly.

Wow ... I pushed the limit on the wireless transfer: a 6.54 gig file ... and it did it just fine. It didn't stall. It took about an hour to do. I guess it has something to do with my PC. Well, I guess it could be the router too, eh.

If it's a bad PC ... it's a great excuse to tell my wife I need a new one!

Try updating your NIC drivers and replacing you ethernet cable.  Also try disabling any anti-virus software you may have running and try the transfer again.

It's unlikely to be the router - but not impossible.

Like ECF says, try updating the network card drivers, try replacing cable (between the PC and the router), and try plugging that PC into a different port on the router.
