Painfully slow connection after firmware upgrade
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:33:37 PM »

Hello:

I have been using my 825 router for over a year now with absolutely no problems or speed issues.

Last week I upgraded the firmware to 1.13NA and ever since, the wireless network has been slooooooow (wired is fine).  If the laptop/ipad/phone is in the same room as the router, things are fine.  Anywhere else in the house, the speed drops off to almost nothing even though the signal strength is very good.  For example:  Under the "Speed" section of my "Wireless Network Connection Status" on my laptop, I'm seeing 150.0Mbps in the same room as the router, 25.0 Mbps in the hallway and 1.0 Mbps about 5 steps further away.  All the while, the signal strength is showing Excellent.  Speakeasy speedtest: Wired 23.36 Mbps, wireless at the end of the hallway, .12 Mbps.

Hardware version: A1
Firmware version: 1.13NA
Cicso Cable modem DPQ3212
I have tried all suggestions listed may times by FurryNutz.  Nothing has helped

I would like to revert back to firmware 1.0, but the router will not let me.

Please help?

If your router had been working well for you, just curious, why did you update? Was there a problem?

If this ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If it can't be bridge, try using the DMZ on the modem with the IP address that the 825 gets from the ISP Modem.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I upgraded only because I noticed it was available.  Things were working flawlessly before.  I didn't know people were having problems with new firmwares.

I had already tried all of your suggestions with no help.  The WAN IP is NOT 192.168.0.x

Is there any way to revert back to firmware 1.0.  I have the .bin file, but the router will not accept it.

Did you follow the FW update sticky information when updating FW?
Did you reload the saved configuration file after the update or manually configure the router from scratch?
Have you tried a difference PC to see if issue is tracking?

I followed the firmware upgrade directions as per the router instructions.  I then reloaded the saved configuration.  When that didn't work, I reset the router and configured on my own.  When that didn't work I reset, reflashed, reset and configured on my own.  When that didn't work I reset and followed your list of instructions.  When that didn't work I started on this forum.

I have tried 2 cell phones, 2 laptops, 1 ipad and a sony TV.  All have wireless connection problems.  The desktop pc (wired) has no problems.  Nothing had problems before the firmware update.

Have you tried going back to Firmware   v1.11   5/04/2009?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
