DIR 655 As Pure Access Point
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:53:09 AM »

Ok I have a DIR 655 which I am trying to use as a pure access point for a network based on a Comcast SMC  Modem/Router   On the DIR 655 I have the DHCP turned off and on the Internet Connection I have given the DIR 655 a static  address of 10.1.10.2  with Gateway and Primary DNs 10.1.10.1 (The SMC is 10.1.10.1)  I have the DIR 655 connect to the SMC Lan  to Lan.   DIR 655 is G only to deal with and IPAD issue....

The wireless devices get an internet connection BUT...  I can only contact the DIR 655 wirelessly   the SMC does not show the DIR 655 as connected I can not ping the DIR-655 from the SMC.   I can " see" the static addresses I have given to two network cameras  but they don't not respond to Port Forwarding I have assigned at the SMC  (that is more for info as I realize that might be a SMC issue)  Anu help on how to make the DLIK visable to the wired network would be appreciate

Ensure you turned off ALL features on the 655 in this mode, SPI, WISH, ALL Filters, WPS, and items like that.
I some cases when assigning addresses to this router, it will not how up on the host routers connected status list. I notice this one a few of these routers. SO you'll just have to know its there and working and write down the IP address. Again, this router isn't really meant to be an AP and wasn't designed as such so some features or functionality maybe unusable in this mode where an actual built DAP model AP does have these features and functions.

Thanks..   I will check.. the biggest issue is that I can not access it from any hardwired client on the network by address nor does the address respond to ping

You should be able to. I can access the web page and configure it in this mode. Something in how yours in configured isn't correct.

Try uPnP ON and OFF to test.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Ok this is getting frustrating....

(You should be able to. I can access the web page and configure it in this mode. Something in how yours in configured isn't correct.

Turning a router into an AP.)

I followed the guide  (it could have been a little clearing as far as WHICH IP to set what it referred to as a LAN IP I would have called the WAN.... any way we have reset it ..  The wireless devices are getting internet access BUT I can not see or ping the routers new address 10.1.10.50...  and it appears to be in some manner blocking port forwarding....  Yeah since the SMC is the gateway you could blame it but before i switched the cameras over to wireless and required access through the DLINK  port forwarding worked fine...

i guess that i need to find a device designed for this type service

What happens if you directly connect a PC to the back of the 655 in this mode? Might need to set up a static IP on the PC first however try automatic and see if you can ping and get the 655 web page.

I would recommend checking out a DAP model AP for this kind of set up.
DAP-1360, 1522 or 1525

Thanks for the suggestion

I just can't see why I can contact the router in its IP that just doesn't make sense

the issue with the port forwarding also bothers me... why is port forwarding blocked when the camera is wireless but not hard wired

based on this and issue i had gettng the IPAD2 3g  I would be hard pressed to recommend another DLINK

Access Points don't Port Forward that is a router function, if you want to use the router as an AP then anything that is the function of the router will not work.

earlier in the thread i had hoped that I made it clear that I was using the SMC Modem/Router for Port Forwarding.  I am not using any of those functions in the DIR 655

the strange thing I am seeing is that if a web cam is hooked physically to the DIR 655  then the port forwarding occurs..  If the cam is connecting wirelessly no forwarding occurs.   The Intranet IP on the web cam is static..

that and the total inability of the DIR 655 to respond on its static IP is what is killing me

Have you set up Reserved IP addresses for your devices ON the Host router/modem and set deviced to Auto Obtain. This is preferred. If the 655 is set up in AP mode and your using the Host modem/router for IP addressing and port forwarding, then there shouldn't be anything on the 655 router blocking anything, it's just acting as a pass thru connection for WiFi and any LAN connections in back. All other configurations you'll need to review the host modem/router settings for.
