I have had a DSR-1000N since December 2011 & it has never worked properly. 4 months after reporting the problem they sent me a new one & it is the same.

To cut a long story short the wireless upload speed is about 1kbps when the latest firmware is applied. It is OK with the old firmware but the USB isn't recognized.
When are they going to write a set of firmware which will make this expensive router do what it is designed for?
D-Link's self service portal is a joke & so is this notice to dsr users which tells me to go to a local service office. There is an excuse on D-links web site saying they have technical issues with the telephone lines, please use self service portal.

i have DSR-1000n also...USB is able to use HDD till 250GB...500GB and 4 TB ive tried are detected in router, but via 192.168.10.1\disk-1 there are only 2 config files, nothing else.

D-link Support is not able to tell me what is the max capacity supported.
They even make me a video how is 500GB drive working for them , but with 1.08B89 FW which is not even available for download!

What format is your USB drives? NTFS is only supported I believe for USB drives connected to D-Link routers.

Officially 500Gb drive sizes is only supported. Some routers off hand can see and support more.

I'd reconsider your storage needs. You'll need to understand that routers, even though they support some USB drives, are not really meant for NAS storage. Also understand that performance will not be the same if you use USB for storage, file xfers and streaming solutions. Routers have to do additional processing of the drives when using NAS, would not be needed. Also understand that having such large drive sizes, as the drive becomes more full with user data, the longer it will take the router to process and catalog the contents of the drive every time the router is booted. This is one reason why, I presume, that D-Link doesn't really support any sizes over 500gb. It would take a long time to catalog a 4Tb drive once it was full. 

I recommend that you get into actual NAS devices that are designed to support this kind of configuration and not use the router and USB drives as NAS solutions. I just got a DNS-345 and I must say, I don't know why I waited so long. I stream movies and store files and theres many other features that the DNS offers that I still have to learn about.

I recommend that you review the DNS series of NAS devices that D-Link offers and see if you can find a better solution then using a router and USB drive.

You'll be happier in the end.

Dlink makes me angry, if is as you described, they should write it in the description what HDD are supported and up to which capacity. Also term "shareport" DSR has it in FW , but they dont support it and they dont need the APP it self as other cheaper routers - no word about it. Also nothing mention how to access the HDD after is connected, had to write to dlink support to tell me to use IP address.
BTW: even in CZ support they had no idea up to which HDD capacity they support - is not documented for customers as well for local support

I really regret that i went with dlink again, thought the TOP in the serie and most expensive would have all their crap sorted out. But is still the same story...should go with Draytek - much better UI and Support- just to compare , check that all they support via USB - samba,ftp and even filebrowser and the top is you can install some torrent client to the router!

About the NAS storage - i would give another 200e to get some, also not all of them support 4tb drives, then not sure how is it with NTFS support. If it uses EXT i need to store somewhere 4tb of data - no place for that. To operate it i need still some PC to access and set and stuff. So ive ordered Android PC Minix 7 (around 80e) , i can do all and much more 3xUSB so i can connect any drive and go the NAS job.

I presume that his model router was designed for corporate and business class needs and not for handling NAS or major storage solutions. This is not a fault of the router or by design. This model series is specifically meant for business and those with business networking needs that this router is designed to support.

Other users, home and average users need to be aware that having this kind of router may or may not fofill there needs and in most cases is over kill for there kind of network needs. Routers are meant to be routers, not NAS. There are specific products for dealing with NAS and personally I like it that way. Having a router trying to perform additional operations will impact any performance and over all, is not desired.

Its the Users responsibility to review there network needs and then research, BEFORE THEY BUY, on what router and storage products will meet those needs and support them. It's not D-Links responsibility after the fact to make it work for the users and there needs. You should have phone contacted D-Link sales and support and asked questions before buying.

All D-Link products work well out of the box when correctly planned, reviewed and configured correctly. If this product does not work for your networking and storage needs, then you probably have made the wrong choice in buying this before you should have again, reviewed and researched on what you really needed. I recommend that you go back and review your needs then find a different solution thats meets your needs.
