Is my Router Dying? Need advice
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:43:26 AM »

So Ive had a 655 for about a year and a half... But recently Ive had to reboot it 3-5 times a day. Here's a list of the problems and set up

Current Set up

Dir-655
Hardwired Main Laptop
Hardwired DNS-323
Hardwired PS3
Hardwired Brother all in one
Wifi Laptop (torrent machine)
Wifi (using DDWRT 54g as wireless client) Xbox 360
Wifi Xbox 360

Problems

1. I play a lot of call of duty 5, but lately I've been getting waiting for 5 more players when there is 60,000 people playing (does not matter which type of match I try) this problem usually goes away with a hard reboot of the router

2. Router is exteremly warm lately (underneath is very hot if you ask me, but it could be me)

3. I've installed Twonky on my DNS-323 this week, the first day it worked very well with my 360's... Then I tired yesturday to load a movie up for my youngest, and it hung on the opening file. While trying to reboot for the PS3, I decided to try the 360 and movies, bang loaded and played no problem. As well I did try to play a movie last night, forgot that I left it at the opening screen on the 360, after about 5min the movie started to play.

4. Internet seems slow, As well I've been transfering files between my Torrent Laptop (HP 6910 newer laptop) to my DNS-323. Some days it takes 3-4min to transfer a gig. Other times I get 120min.... I really am thinking its the router.

If it is the router I am a little pissed off, I paid $150 for a high end router, and now I'm guessing its out of warrenty, and if its anything like my DSM-510 that I'm currently waiting for a call back from Dlink product support engineer. Then I'm sol.

Thanks Winky

Log in and save your gateway settings to your desktop.  Once saved, locate the reset button on the back of the 655 and hold it in for about 30 seconds (long enough for two reset cycles).

Try setting up some of the basic settings like wireless SSID, Security, and UPnP and give it a day or two to see if the situation improves/stays the same/gets worse.

I'm going to guess it gets better, if so you should delete the gateway.gws file and finish setting up the 655 if you need to.  If it gets worse... time for a new 655 since yours is out of warranty already.  At least the 655 can be had under $100 these days.
