IPv6 support
« on: March 20, 2009, 11:34:57 AM »

According to this: ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/datasheets/DIR-825.pdf the DIR-825 has IPv6 certification.  Can anyone who already has this router please confirm that IPv6 is indeed supported?

Thanks.

Greetings!

I just completed running Microsoft's Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool and, as part of that set of tests, it performs a Network Address Translator Type test. The successful completion of the test is described as follows:

Quote from: Microsoft
Success of this test means that your Internet router or firewall acts similar to a cone NAT. This means that it helps applications which use Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) to connect, regardless of your ISP's IPv6 support. For example, in Windows Vista you can collaborate with others across the Internet using Windows Meeting Space.

The DIR-825 running firmware v1.01 successfully completed all tests including the Network Address Translator Type test. This seems to confirm IPv6 support.

Edit: from the detailed results:
Quote
The IGD's NAT type is RESTRICTED CONE

Hope this helps.

While the hardware is IPv6 compatible, it's yet to be implemented in the firmware.

In other words, the marketing document referred to in mactalla's original post is basically a vaporware crock:

Quote from: DLink
This router carries both the silver and gold IPv6 Ready logos, signifying that it not only supports the IPv6 protocol, but is also compatible with IPv6 equipment
from other manufacturers. It allows you to move to a 128-bit addressing system and directly connect to anybody in the world using your unique IP address. Using
a dual-stack architecture, this router can handle routing for both IPv4 and IPv6 networks at the same time, so you can be assured that your equipment is forward
and backward compatible.

So, you had to wait and make me look foolish before posting a response to this question? :o

Thanx or not,

I'm not really sure I follow your meaning. As far as I know we have a scheduled update in the future for IPv6 support.

I think you did this to yourself. you represented that you ran the test yourself and it passed. but the truth of the matter you could have not run the test as the IPv6 is not even implamented on the unit as of yet according the the dlink rep.

In the future you might not want to do this as this can cause issues for a great number of people.

Thank you Sabertooth & Lycan for your input.  I've been doing more digging and came across this: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008detail.asp (no direct link; need to select DIR-825).

From that I gather the following:
- DIR-825 has two revisions (so far)
- Revision B1 has IPv6 support in its initial firmware and manual
- The B1 firmware is not compatible with A1 hardware (even if the drivers are the same, the firmware itself is too big -- looks like 6MB, but I believe A1 only has 4MB flash)
- The datasheet claiming IPv6 must have been talking about rev.B1 (I've never been a fan of marketing when they don't make things clear).

From past experience (not specifically D-Link), I wouldn't hold my breath for IPv6 support on A1 hardware, so that leaves me searching for B1.  In B&M stores I can only find A1, and of course online you can never tell in advance.  I tried finding out when B1 is/will be available in NA, but the guy on the phone was less than helpful.  Not sure if that kind of question is taboo or if he didn't really understand what I was asking.

So I'll wait a bit longer in hopes that B1 comes to town, and otherwise I'll probably have to go with something else that supports 3rd party firmware just so I can be sure to have the features I want.  (At the expense of some signal quality if the choices don't improve in the meantime).

Cheers.

I'm fairly postive that the 825 has more then 4Mb of flash. I think it's 16 or more. I can doublecheck to be sure. Also I believe that the b1 is NOT a ubicom platform, but I could be wrong.

I heard mention it has 4MB flash & 16MB RAM.  But I have no idea where they got their information, so it's quite possible to be incorrect.  Regardless, if the B1 is not Ubicom, then the firmware wouldn't be usable in the A1 even if size wasn't an issue.  You mentioned that you thought an update would be coming for the 825 for IPv6.  Do you know / can you reveal whether that's for A1?

Currently no. However I do know that there are parties of a large ISP nature pushing for ALL of our current platforms to be IPv6 compatible. So it has a fairly good chance of making the list.

That's encouraging to hear.  If I see a new A1 firmware with support before I can find a B1, then I'll go that route.

Thanks for the info!

And you might want to actually try running the test in question before calling me a liar. Of course, I did run the test and the unit did pass but apparently that's only indicating the hardware compatability and not the fully workable implementation.

PS mactalla: I have an A1 unit that I purchased from Newegg.com

I never called you a liar. I do not need to run the test why should I? I am neather conferming or denying IPv6 support you and the Dlink rep have done that.

What I did do is set you striate. you got on to the dlink rep as he confermend that the unit does -NOT- have full ipv6 support yet and making you look stupid. it was no fault of the rep and yet you got on him about it...
