Streaming HD Content to DSM-510 HELP!
« on: March 20, 2009, 02:01:48 PM »

This is probably one that D-Link will need to look into:

When I used TVersity I was able to stream all my 720p content to my 720p LCD TV using the DSM-510 HD media player... Now that I've got the DNS-323 hooked up as my main AV Streamer, it will NOT stream the same 720p content to my 720p TV -- I get sound, but no video. If I hook up the Xbox360 it plays just the same video just fine on the same TV.

Tell me, what is the point of having a HD media player, if it doesn't playback HD content? D-Link needs to fix how the streaming of HD content is handled because I'm a little upset that their own products are incompatible, and right now it's useless having an HD streaming device.

Thanks,

When I get home I will make a small sample for you -- I encoded one of my blu-ray discs to 720p so I'll take about 5-10 seconds of it and upload it for you to test.

I just realized that I put DSM-510... Oops, I mean DSM-520 (the full-size HD media player, not the compact one)

Anyways, ECF a couple days ago I sent you a sample clip that comes up with no video when played on my device... For now, I've got my Xbox360 in my bedroom to stream the HD media as it streams properly from the DNS-323. Again like I said, it used to stream HD content when I used TVersity but the DNS-323 won't stream anything higher than 480p to the DSM-520.

I tested your file and I am seeing this issue as well. However I do have may other HD video that I play and I have not encountered this issue. Have you only seen this issue with .mp4 HD video files or do you have this issue with others in other formats as well? Also what software is used to create these video files? I am trying to narrow down the cause if this issue. The file you provided to replicate this issue has been forwarded to the engineers to investigate the possible cause and solution.

Thanks for looking into this. I haven't actually tried with any other formats because MP4 is all I use -- I have to be able to stream to 2 D-Link DSM-520's, an Xbox 360, a PS3, and my iPhone, without the need to cross-convert or transcode.

I've used a few different pieces of software to create the video; Handbrake (For Mac & PC), VisualHub (for Mac) and AVS Video Converter (for PC). All software gives the same results, because really it's being encoded with the same codec - Xvid mp4 iso v2 with AAC Audio.

Again, the HD files work perfectly across the board, except for D-Link's own DSM-520.

Thanks,

Hmm its odd because the file plays fine via USB direct so the DSM-520 should not have any issue with the file because the DSN-323 does not do any transcoding it simply make the file available. Still looking into this... I do not see this issue with HD avi, wmv, mpeg, or mpeg2 videos only seems to be HD mpeg4 videos with a problem only.

I never tried playing the file USB Direct to narrow it down, only reason I knew the file was fine because TVersity and Twonky made the file just available too (I disable transcoding) and it played fine, so it definitely has to do with the way the DNS-323 is passing the data along.

Hopefully you find something that can be solved with a firmware update :)
