Having to restart my router every few days.
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:15:55 AM »

I have been having an issue with the router every few days where I get no internet. Which I end up unplugging the router for 5 sec and then plugging it in. Then everything is fine again. Well its getting annoying to have to do this. Is there something in my router that is not configured correctly or is it a firmware problem. Please help me!

Firmware: 1.21NA

Could be FW. There was a known issue with v1.21 on some routers.
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
I might review the FW update sticky in this forum and update to v1.23. It was fixed in v1.22.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I suspect a lot of SSID's in your area which is making the 4500 locking up.  More and more people are starting to use wireless in their homes, thus the congestion..

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Also are you wired or wireless when connected to the 4500 when you have to restar the router?

Try changing to a channel that is open and not being used. Find what the other 2 routers are using and set yours to a channel farthest away from them. Try 1, 6 or 11.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz or single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.

One thing to test, turn off the wireless radio and see if you experience the same problem while wired. If you do then update to v1.23NA.

Please review the FW update sticky in this forum for the process.

IF you don't experience the same problem then I recommend switching from 2.4Ghz on the wireless and go to 5ghz and test with a 5Ghz supporting adapter.

load up that InSSIDer application on a wireless device and that will tell you what the other routers are using?

Hey Furry,

Long time no see. I have been home a total of 4 seeks since Jan 1st. I started having the same issues. I know you said not to upgrade the firmware, but i am having second thoughts. This started within the last couple months. I also had to have a Comcast Line tech come out and told me I was getting way too much noise from the house kitty corner to me. It was feeding into my Motorola 6121. So he put a filter block on that house. Then put all kinds of splitters to get my signals to where they need to be. I am only using Internet from Comcast. I have a 4way splitter on the outside of the house, and a 2way splitter in the house. My neighbors across the street have 4 bar signal in MW3, and I have a 3 bar signal. Same internet as each other. I know there is something else wrong. I would like you to take a look at my router settings to see if something changed, or if i should update my firmware. I am out of town on business in NY, flying to FL tonight, and then home tomorrow night. I should be available saturday sometime. Send me a message on Xbox Live Saturday when you will be available.

Thanks,

Ok, sounds good. Glad the ISP took notice of the noise.

Are you the only one online while gaming? or are there others?
What version router HW do you have and what FW version is currently loaded?
