SharePort question
« on: April 10, 2012, 02:00:30 PM »

I setup sharePort today and attached an external 1 TB hard drive. Seems that All my internet connections are slow now. I have a seperate PC that I use VPN to connect to work with and suddenly its very slow. My wife said her laptop suddenly slowed down too. The PC that I installed SharePort software seems slow too. Is/can SharePort be dragging down the router? I turned off the external HD and it's still slow.
Thanks

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Wow. Thanks for the reply. I only wanted to know if SharePort could drag the system down. Everything worked ok right up to the time I install the software and rebooted the DIR-655. I will check those items out. I appreciate the quick reply.

SP should not impact performance after installation. I would check some of the suggestions. Make sure you turn OFF any 3rd party and MS firewall programs as these can interfere. Keep us posted.

Are you using and ISP modem or one you purchased? I hightly recommend buying your own and selecting a Motorola SB 6121 if you have cable ISP.  ;)

I use the Comcast modem. Arris is the name of it. I have their phone service so I think I'm stuck with it. I may change soon though if they don't lower my bill. I'd keep Comcast as Internet provider only because CenturyLink only has 1.5 at best at my house for now.

Eh, ok, Ya, Arris isn't the best and if you have phone svc, your stuck. I would see if the Arris mode has a built in router and if it does, put the routers Private IP address into the Arris DMZ. It might also be a stand alone and providing the 655 with a good public IP address which is preferred.

To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

ALso, if I am not mistaken, the Arris unit is not DOCSIS 3 compliant so you will not be able to partake of any DOCSIS 3 speed bumps and whatnot....  And I could be mistaken....  8-)

Some new Arris modes are DOCSIS 3 supporting. However I prefer Motorola.  ;) Enjoy.
