DWA-556 causing Win Vista Home Premium Shutdown failure
« on: March 21, 2009, 10:13:44 PM »

Installed DWA-556 H/W ver. A1, F/W ver: 1.30, Driver ver: 7.6.1.194, in new Dell XPS 630i desktop, with Win Vista Home Premium ver 6.0 SP1 64 bit. Am using WPA PSK security, setup via D-Link install CD. Successfully link to Motorola Surfboard gateway thru one 8" block wall and one gypsum wall, distance of 30 ft. Performance good, with no dropped signals.
System shutdown problem not seen before, began to occur. Rather than shutting down, system goes into Restart mode. To shut down, have to push off switch on CPU, or attached APS unit. Then on next power-up, CPU immediately starts power-up when APS switch turned on (powers up without pushing CPU on switch). Then, during start up sequence, receive "xxxxx did not post" message, and waits for user intervention to continue startup sequence. Once system boots up, everything normal. Ran Win System Performance, Advanced, which points to D-Link Wireless Manager program causing "Windows to standby or hibernate slowly". Tried stopping Wireless Manager, and disconnecting from network prior to next Shutdown, but result was same...System Restart instead of Shutdown.
-Is this a known problem?
-If so, Is there a workaround? and, Will it be fixed?
Thanks for your time and attention...

Jay, Try to uninstall the D-Link utility and install the driver only.. Please reference the following links below.

Thanks for your prompt suggestion.
Further testing revealed that somehow the Control Panel/ Power Options for both the physical Shutdown button, and the Vista Start/ Shutdown button had been changed from "Shutdown" to "Sleep". Dont know when/how this occurred, but suspect it was during an auto-update.
After manually changing both to Shutdown, I didnt have the problem for a few weeks, then it returned. Subsequently, I uninstalled the D-Link Wireless Manager program as suggested; Also tried disconnecting from network prior to shut-down. Neither has cured the auto-reboot problem. On the Dell XPS 6xx desktop I have to push and hold the power on/off button immediately after windows shuts down, otherwise it will simply auto-reboot. On this Dell, you can distinguish exactly when the reboot starts because the fan's RPM audibly  increases. Not a very graceful work-around, but it powers off. Problem apparently not going to be seriously addressed by D-Link...apologize for late posting of this updated info.

I have been having a similar problem. Even since I installed the DWA-556 my computer will always reboot instead of shutting down. I disabled the 'restart when a fatal error occurs' option but now it still is rebooting for some reason. This is happening in both Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 beta. I'll give your solution a try when I get home from work and see if that helps.

Nope, computer is still rebooting after I hit shut down - immediately after. My power management in my BIOS says to stay off when shut down even if AC power is detected.

And in Windows 7 I get an extremely poor connection - even after I uninstalled the software and installed the driver manually.

What bit version is your OS?

Also are you using the D-Link utility or windows utility to connect to a network?

64 bit Vista and Windows 7 - works in neither.

I tried using the D-Link utility, didn't work, uninstalled and removed all traces of D-Link utility and driver. Reinstalled drivers manually and still didn't work.

Like I said previously, all options in BIOS and hardware settings to allow the hardware to wake the computer have been disabled.

This seems to be a pretty common problem from a quick look around these forums...

Go into you bios and disable PME event wake up. That is the only option that has to be disbled to use the pci express card

I am tired, really tired of fighting Vista x64 and all the hardware issues.

After trying unsuccessfully to have a reliable fast wireless connection between my PC and the wireless router I decided to spend some money in new hardware.

I bought a new D-Link Wireless Router DIR-615 and a new D-Link PCI-e DWA-556 so I wouldn't have any "compatibility issues".

Have same problem, PC won't shutdown or Sleep, it just keeps rebooting/restarting itself whenever I try to. Wireless network works perfectly so I fixed one issue and got a new one, even worse, it doesn't seem to end!!!

I already tried uninstalling all the software and reinstalling the card only with the drivers of the CD as recommended above. Did not work.

I guess I will end up returning both D-Link items because I think that shutting down my PC unproperly will lead to more issues...... AND I WILL NOT RECOMMEND D-LINK PRODUCTS TO ANYONE.
I haven't been able to find a solution for this anywhere. HEEEEELP!!!

I consider myself handy with computers, here's my info:
Windows Vista Enterprise x64
AMD X4 9600 2.3GHz
6GB RAM
500+360GB dual HDD
NVidia Quadro FX3700 512MB DDR2
D-Link DWA-556

I am having the same issues and have tried both types of drivers. Is there any fix for this issue?
