HDD making clicking noise
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:39:00 PM »

My HDD (Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB) on the left side (Volume_2) is not accessible. When I log into webserver, it asks me to format the drive.

WHY it happened: Yesterday I was trying to access files over the network and was not able to do so; the explorer is going into continuous loop. Thus I restarted DNS-323 through webserver, and tried to access the files but still not successful. I tried to manually shut down DNS-323 by holding the button for 10 sec, but it didn't want to. Thus, pulled the power plug and then replugged. After restarting, I was not able to connect to the LH side HDD (volume_2), but the RH side HDD (volume_1) got connected (i.e Volume_1 is visible in the network but not the Volume_2).

I shut down the DNS-323 by holding the button for 10sec and then restart, and noticed that the LH HDD (the non-connecting one) is making a clicking noise for 11 times (at 1 sec interval) and then goes silent.

Symptom: The HDD starts normally, similar to the other one, then starts clicking for 11 times and then goes silent. The LH HDD LED goes solid (no blinking). The other HDD LED starts blinking after sometime done start-up.

Please advise what might have happened to this Volume_2. Can I recover the data?

I have 2 identical Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB under standard configuration. I access them via. Windows-7 network. The FW on DNS-323 is 1.09.

Your disc is propably dead. You can pay some company to recover your data but its not cheap.

I wonder why it happened to only one HDD. How much it will cost to recover the data? Any estimate?

It can happen to any drive that is the reason for backups.

About say 5 years ago a manager at our company had a hard drive fail on him, and of course he had no backup and of course he had to have the data on it.  I believe the price for the service was about $750.

Dead drive - it happens.  Do you have backups?

You could try the HDD manufactures tools on the HDD by popping it out of the NAS and into your desktop - but this might not yield any positive results.

Thanks Dukecze and Chriso.
I tried to call the Seagate tech rep and not much helpful. I ran Seatool and tells me the drive failed the generic test.
Unfortunately, my back-up is old and desperately need the data to recover.
Does anybody have a knowledge of a reliable company in GTA (greater toronto area), Ontario, Canada where I can get it recovered?

Thanks,
