Problem updating to the latest 1.35 code.
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:52:09 PM »

Hello all.

I am running 1.33 and it has been pretty stable.  Lately I have been having some lag issues, so I thought I would upgrade to 1.35.  The problem is that, I upload the file, the router reboots, but it still shows 1.33 as the running version.  Any idea what's going on?  Should I even bother upgrading to 1.35?

Also, I have had this router for several years.  Is it time to upgrade?  What model would you suggest?  I like D-Link, but am not opposed to another brand.  I just want to the best/fastest performance I can get.

Thanks,

Tony

Lets get some info and try some suggestions before updating:
Can you describe how your lagging?

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Lets get some info and try some suggestions before updating:
Can you describe how your lagging?  The lag exists primarily when I stream videoon my Panasonic ST30 TV from Netflix and similar services.  There is just some periods where the video will play well and then rebuffer out of the blue.  I have verified there is little downloading happening in the background when this occurs.

What region are you located?  I an in the Los Angeles, Ca area.
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?  Wireless

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  Time Warner cable modem.
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?  Stand alone.
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?  A motorola, I believe, but will check when I get home.

To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
The modem is bridged.  The IP address on the D-Link is a live, routable IP address.

I will try the things you listed above when I get home tonight.

Thanks for the through feedback.

Do the flash and then do a factory reset after the flash and you should show 1.35.

The OP already flashed with the 1.35 version, it is just showing wrong and the Factory reset should fix that.

Ok...I finally got around to resetting to factory defaults.  It still showed version 1.33.  I think upgraded to 1.35 again while still in factory default settings.  Still 1.33.  I then reapplied my saved settings to get the router back to its previous settings.  Still 1.33.

So, I guess it's getting close to time to upgrade.  Any recommendations for a router that is top of the line these days?  I have a NAS that I use for streaming videos to my Roku as well as some light gaming.

Um, you think you applied v1.35? You sure you downloaded v1.35 file from the web site to your pc? After applying the update, did you perform one more factory reset then manually setup the router from scratch with out appling the saved confifuration file.

The steps I took were.

1. Reset to factory defaults.  Noticed the router still showed 1.33
2. Reinstalled 1.35 having just downloaded it again from Dlink.com.  Router still showed 1.33
3. Reset to factory defaults a 2nd time.  Still showed 1.33
4. Reloaded the config file to restore my settings.  Still showed 1.33.

Thanks

When you update the firmware, does it tell you anything as it's going?  When you first point it to the unzipped .bin file you should see it say stuff as its doing the update.
