Thanks. you are very much helpful.

I  have gone through that link.I  am stuck  at some parts. Could you please clarify ?

Quote
1. Plug the power into the router. Connect one of your computers to the router (LAN port) using an Ethernet cable. Make sure your IP address on the computer is 192.168.0.xxx (where xxx is between 2 and 254).

I  already get IP  in wireless mode in my computer. see this..

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : Home
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

I get this in wireless ... 192.168.1.2  ....is it ok

Do I still need to use  ethernet cable  and connect to host router ?

Quote
Close the browser and change your computer’s IP settings back to the original values as in Step 1.

I am not changing IP of  the computer but chaning IP of  AP  as you recommended .  so  "change your computer’s IP settings back to the original values" ......is not understandable.

7. Connect an Ethernet cable in one of the LAN ports of the AP router and connect it to your host router.

Does this mean this AP will be always hooked to host router with ethernet cable  ?  I dont want that . I want a wireless AP.

AP means that this 655 will always be wired to the host router. DLink routers do not support bridging or relay operations which is probably what your looking for. If so, then you should look at DAP model units such as DAP 1360 or 1522.

You'll need to refer to the Mfr for that information and if it supports that.

For anyone wanting to configure the DIR655 as an AP, other responses in this forum worked great for me, thank you FurryNutz and hinten. To horrible's question about a wireless AP, a solution could be a WiFi extender. Get one with dual radios, 2.4 GHz to connect to your existing router, and 5 GHz for the expanded coverage area as long as you are ok using a second SSID.

I have followed all the steps to configure a DIR-655 as a wired AP. My main router is a Trendnet 450bps Wireless N Gigabit router model TEW-691GR. The Trendnet's IP is 192.168.10.1 I was unable to access the DIR-655 in Step 8 until I configured it to 192.168.10.50. The problem is that the DIR-655 is not showing up on the network. I am cabled with a proven good cable to LAN ports on both. I am obviously missing something here. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you getting a internet connection thru the 655 when connected to it? If you have it the same IP address pool, then you should be ok. You'll need to access the 655 using the new IP address.

A reason why that IP address may not show up is that it's a static IP address that may not be reported by your Mfr router. You'll need to refer to your routers Mfr web site for support and information on this.

We see this on D-Link routers as well, statis IP addressed devices will not show in the Dynamic DHCP Clients list. It normally does show in the Status/LAN Connected devices though.

Yes I can connect via an Ethernet cable. It is only connecting at 100mbs. I am running Windows 7 Professional . I attempted to map my network via the Network and Sharing window. It fails with the "Windows cannot create the map. Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or their is an incompatible router on the network."
I am unable to test the wireless because I cannot separate the AP far enough from the router at this time to tell where the signal is coming from, since I cant see the AP on the network.
Thanks you for your help.

  • What Hardware version is your 655 router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Is the main host router Gb supporting on the LAN connections?
Swap the LAN cable between the 655 AP and the Main host router. Try CAT6 cabling.

Hardware version A4 Firmware 1.20. Located in Western Wisconsin. I swapped the cables with no speed increase. I do not nave a Cat6 cable handy at the moment. On the host router, I am at 1Gbps. if that answers your question.

Try this, wire connect your PC to the 655 AP and check the speed connection on the PC. Does it connect at 100 or Gb speeds?

You have an older REV model of the 655...

A little investigation revealed that the older laptop being used for testing is only capable of 100mbs. My bad. Everything is working fine. Thank you for your help.
