Horrible connection quality and regular disconnects...
« on: May 18, 2012, 09:32:33 PM »

First off, I tried multiple times to register a username here and no matter what I chose I would only get "An Error Has Occurred" when I submit the info. I've tried this over several days and keep getting the same dead end. So, I went to bugmenot.com and I'm using a generic username that was given there in order to post this. So...there's that...   ;D

Starter info... I'm running Hardware Rev A4 of the DIR-655 on the 1.33NA firmware. I never upgraded past that firmware because of all the horror stories I'd read about new firmware here. Up until lately it's been fairly stable. The issues I refer to SEEM to coincide with my recent installation of Apple TV hardware on my wireless network, though I can't confirm. It's never been great with this router, so that could be coincidental. On my network I have a hardwired Mac Mini, wireless Macbook Pro, a hardwired D-Link DNS-321 NAS box, Apple TV, Logitech Revue, iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone and occasionally one each of a Samsung and LG Bluray player (only when they're powered up, which is rarely). I'm also using a wireless repeater in the middle of my house because the DIR-655 doesn't yield a very usable signal in my master bedroom, which is on the opposite side of the house as the router.

With all that being said... I have had terrible issues being able to keep a steady connection wirelessly with this router as of late. Streaming Youtube videos will stop after a few seconds, loading websites will just stop responding all together, and I can't even keep a connection to stream music from my Mac Mini to my phone or AppleTV using Home Sharing in iTunes. I'll get a few seconds of a song and it will just drop out completely. It's been extremely annoying and I'm ready to take a hammer to this router, to be honest.

I've checked my logs and there were all kinds of FIN:ACK, PSH:ACK and SYN:ACK TCP packets that are being blocked. I noticed many of them were coming from Apple IP addresses, so I assume that the AppleTV had a lot to do with those. I actually used the Inbound Filter settings to allow requests from a whole block of Apple IP's, which seems to have settled log items from them down a lot. There are still quite a few that seem to be coming from Google IP addresses (I presume the Logitech Revue since it uses the Google TV interface?), but the Google IP's are too random to go allowing a large block.

Here are the IP's of the stuff running on my network right this second:
IP Address           Name (if any)
192.168.1.3   Brents-iPad
192.168.1.100   MacMini
192.168.1.150   Brent's Macbook Pro
192.168.1.248   Brents-iPhone
192.168.1.254   Dougserv
(All of these but the server have an IP in the reservation list)

Here's a look at the last 2 hours of my log from the router:

The wireless statistics section seems a bit odd to me as well (LAN and WAN looked normal):

Wireless Statistics

Sent :89562
TX Packets Dropped :391
Received :43589
RX Packets Dropped :490
Errors :145

I have Advanced DNS disabled. All Traffic Shaping and QoS boxes are checked to enable. Comcast is my cable internet provider. I've noticed that my WAN Connection Up Time is often a fairly low number like the connection to the cable modem drops out frequently. Just trying to figure out what to blame and how to fix it. Thanks in advance for any insight. If I missed anything necessary to diagnose let me know.

Welcome!
What region are you located?

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I'm located in South Carolina if that's what you're referring to.

I do not use an ISP provided modem. I own a Zoom 5341 cable modem (This one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825115054). Series 1079, Hardware rev. 1A. Software rev. 1.4.0.31pre5 and Boot rev. PSPU-Boot 1.0.9.15-H2.5 (according to modem diagnostics page). I do notice that the system time for the modem itself is blank and for Time of Day it says "ToD Server Not Found".
I have just one router, the D-Link DIR-655. Connection is cable from wall to the modem, ethernet cable to the DIR-655.

You said turn off ALL QoS *or* Disable Traffic Shaping.  So one or the other and not BOTH? As it stands, I have disabled traffic shaping and left QoS turned on. Worth noting that disabling Traffic Shaping greys out the QoS selections, but leaves the QoS boxes checked.
Advanced DNS was already turned off, per my original post.
DNS Relay was already enabled.
I have reserved IPs set up already, per my original post and all automatically obtain an IP.
TCP and UDP are now both set to Endpoint Independent. UDP was previously set to Address Restricted and TCP was previously Port and Address Restricted.
uPnP was already enabled. Multi-cast Streaming was disabled, but is now enabled.

... This is as far as I got on your list because my modem started resetting and the DIR-655 would just sit at "Establishing connection..." in the WAN section. It did this multiple times. I tried rebooting the modem to no avail. Powered down and rebooted the modem to no avail. So, I disconnected the DIR-655 and plugged directly into my desktop from the modem. Have not had a disconnect since then and it's been about half an hour. This makes me wonder if there's some sort of issue between the router and modem where the router is causing the modem to drop it's connection somehow by how it's behaving or communicating with the modem.

This is the log from my modem:

Step 17 is where I disconnected the router and plugged directly into the computer. No log entries in the past half hour. The MAC address in step 20 is the correct one for the computer that is now hardwired to the modem.

For the rest of your questions...  I was running mixed mode wireless. Auto 20/40 Channel Width. Manually set to Channel 9 because no one around me is using that channel or any one near that. Everyone else uses 1 or 2 and one home uses 4. Security mode is WPA-Personal. No house phones of any kind...only cell. I can't use InSSIDer for anything because, as my original post indicated, there are only Macs in my house. But as I mentioned, no one around me uses the same channel. I can see all that info in the Network section in About this Mac.

I have no antivirus or firewall programs.

Additional info: any clue what these bolded items from the modem's log indicate? These rarely happen when hardwired from modem to computer, mostly just when the DIR-655 is in the chain.

Have you swapped cabling between the ISP modem and the 655?
Factory reset the ISP Modem and 655?

You will have to consult the mfr of the ISP modem for information regarding log entries. I can only presume that the log entries are in regards to something happening on the ISP modem and the ISP services it's trying to connect too. I would also check out a different ISP modem, such as a Motorola SB 6141 modem and see if this issue continues or not. I would also find a neighbor, friend or family to take the 655 router to and put on there network to see if this issue tracks. I would also try a different router to test as well.

Disable both QoS and Traffic Shaping to test.
I would update FW only as a last resort. Please follow the FW update sticky located in the FAQ Library:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=304.0

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Yes, tried other cables. The cable I have plugged directly from modem to my computer right now is the same one that was connected between modem and router. I don't have any CAT6e cable available to try. I did a factory reset on the router, but there is no way that I can see to factory reset the modem...just power cycle it, which I've done many times.

I can get the router functioning properly and connected to the internet if I completely power cycle the modem, let it reset and then turn on the router, but as soon as the modem resets the next time the router will just sit there "Establishing connection..." in the WAN section. I have a feeling it's something to do with Comcast and/or the modem or both in terms of Comcast's firmware for the modem. Way too many errors, timeouts, etc. in the modem log to be normal.

QoS and Traffic Shaping are both disabled with no change. I tried updating firmware yesterday to the latest, but the DIR-655 still shows me on the 1.33NA even after power cycling the router and later doing a factory reset.

Tru updating fw using the fw update sticky located in the FAQLibrary. Fyi, there is no such thing as CAT6e.

I already updated the firmware, but it still says 1.33NA even after multiple power cycles and a factory reset.

Sorry, I meant CAT6. Was working from memory of what you said instead of scrolling up and obviously tacked on a letter. All I have are CAT5 cables.

I have had the router disconnected and powered down since about 2pm today and have been hardwired from modem to Mac Mini and sharing the connection through the Mini's Airport without issue ever since. Only have issues now when the router is involved.
