Why can't I see my 5G band?
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:55:55 PM »

I've been using the DIR-825 since it first came out. My home network includes several computers, a printer, a NAS and a couple of XBox-360s. Every thing but the NAS is using a wireless connection.

Even though I've set up the 5G band, none of my devices can see it. I've used several Wi-Fi detection programs (including one on my Android phone) but that SSID has never shown up with those either.

To answer some of the more obvious questions, my settings for the 5G band:
It is enabled (always).
It is Visible.
802.11 mode: Mixed 802.11n and 802.11a
Enable Auto channel scan is checked.
Transmission rate is: Best(Automatic)
Channel Width: 20Mhz

I dig into this about once every 6 months but have never seen a good tutorial/explanation for getting the 5G band to work. I'm not an advanced user but not a total noob either. I would love to be able to use that band. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.   :)

All your devices probably only support 2.4GHz.  You need a dual band wifi adapter to see the 5Ghz band.  The Xbox doesn't support 5Ghz.

pcjucky is right, if your devices don't support 5ghz on there wireless settings then they won't be able to use the 5ghz band. You can get external wireless adapters that support 5Ghz for some devices. There are USB and LAN port based adapters. I have the MS 5Ghz xbox usb adapter for my 1st gen 360. I also have a 450mb adapter that connects to any LAN port based device. This works well on the 360 and the DIR-857. I haven't had a chance to test it on the 825 yet. I presume it will work. Once you find out what your devices support, you'll have a better idea on your Wifi needs.
