Slow network speed
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:43:05 AM »

I just bought my DNS-321 drive. I have a 1TB Samsung sata drive in it. 32mb cache.
I have the c6 cable connected to my netgear gigbit switch. My PC is running vista 64bit ultimate. 8GBram with a q6600 processor (quad core). It has a gigbit lan card which is connected to my netgear switch with a cat6 cable.

Now the problem.

I am getting transfer speeds of 600kbs.  Sometimes I get transfer speeds of 4MBs when I use a UNC path to do the copy.  I tried this on another PC running WinXP with the same results.
I noticed I will get faster transfer speeds on one 2GB file vs 1000 files that add up to about 2gb.

I verified that the PC & router and switch think it running at Gigbit transfer rate. My PC is running at full duplex. Also tried it on auto. Same result.
I updatedthe firmware on the DNS-321 to 1.1.  Same result.

I know not to expect 300MBS transfer speeds like I have seen on other forums.  I expect to see about 25mbs to 30mbs speeds.

I also took the switch out of the mix and connected to a 10/100 router with exact same results.
I also used a cross over cable and connected the DNS-321 directly to my PC with transfer speeds of 7mbs.  That was the most surprising. That should have been MUCH faster.

reviews of this product show a normal performance in the 10s of megabytes/second as in 12-18. I can think of a few things to look at:

1) is your antivirus scanning the stream as it is copied?
2) are did you look at the detailed settings of the NIC? offloading of error checking, buffer quantities, disabling funky options that you don't need or can complicate things
3) how good are your cables? (some NICs have cable diagnostics)
4) is the 321 still syncing up a raid pair?
5) how good is your NIC?

also, from experience you will not get any improvement by switching to jumbo frames.
hope this helps.

I turend off the anit virus software (The Shield Deluxe 2008. Same issue.
Nic card is built into motherboard. MSI board. Less than a year old.  Pretty good one.

Cables are all cat6.  None longer than 15 feet.

3ft cable from the 321 to switch. I used a cat6 one and the one provided by d-link. Same results

I have not looked at the detaield settings of hte NIC card except for the full duplex.
I can try it but I don't believe that is the problem since I am having the same problem on another computer.

Could it be the switch?

I mapped a network drive on my desktop to another computer connected to my switch.
I transfered a 2GB file.  I was getting 25MB of transfer speed.

So to me that rules out my NIC card, cables and my switch.

It all points to the 321.  Unless I am missing somethign

What do you get when you transfer the SAME 2GB file from the SAME computer to the DNS-321?

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I just tried it. 10mbs.  That file is just one file (a .vhd)

Now I tried a folder that was about 2gb. It contains about 2000 files.

I copied that to a mapped drive on another computer that goes through my gigabit switch.
I was getting 8mb speed.

When I tried coping that same folder to the dns-321. It was about 400kbs.   Yes that is KBS.

I get slow speed on my unit also, does not matter if it is on a local switch or across the network.

I keep crossing my finger that the new beta software will be an improvement.

But since my machine is not very stable to start with....I don't want to experiment with firmware labeled "beta"l.

Also, for the record. I am also having slow transfer speeds. About 5MB/s when I connect it through a 100Mbit Router, if I plug it directly into my MacBookPro (with gigabit e-net) I also get 5MB/s. If I transfer between the my MacBookPro and PC (also with gigabit e-net[no DNS321 involved]) I get ~10MB/s.

Same cables on all the experiments, must be the 321...

I was getting 3MB/s then turned on Jumbo and increased MTU to 9000 and it went to 5MB/s if this helps.

I just want to reiterate that I have this problem both from a locally connected switch and from remote access.

I suspect that the unit is capable of much much more, and would appreciate it if D-Link looked into what can be done for those of us having this issue.

Based on D-Link's input on fixing another issue I was having....I have a strong good feeling that you can help us out.

Thanks!

Plain old file folder transfers between my Thinkpad and the DNS321 (over gigabit lan thru dlink switch) are a steady 13 Megabytes/sec. Between a slightly more powerful desktop machine and the 321, about 18-19 MBytes/sec, steady. I thought *that* was slow....

Image backups through Macrium Reflect regularly put a 7 GByte Ubuntu partition (that's just the data from a 150GB partition; Macrium skips the empty sectors) on the DNS321 in about 5 minutes. Take twice that long to run a verify.

FWIW......YMMV
