Can't Access My Website On The Internet Externally.

Hi All,

I'm trying to see my website on the Internet and can't access it. I have a D-Link DIR-645 router connected to an external ADSL modem and one server (where my website is located), two other desktop computers which are connected by a wired connection to the router as well as four other laptops which are all connected to the router wirelessly. Everything works very well and I can access every website on the Internet, except of course my own website...  :(

Just to clarify, I can successfully access my server and/or website directly on my internal network by inputting the server's internal IP address (ie. 192.168.XXX.XXX) but cannot seem to access my server and/or website externally by requesting it from my browser when I type in http://www.whatevermydomainnameis.com in order to access it from the World Wide Web.

To make sure my website was actually up and working, I did try accessing my website from another Internet connection other than my own Internet connection and I have had no problems accessing my website that way. So this leads me to believe that it is something the router is doing or not doing, in this case. My previous router (not a D-Link) was able to do this very easily so I know it is something which should be possible to do.

Is there anything I can do to access my website from my own connection externally rather than internally, as I have described above? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance...  :)

Welcome!
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.


Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Did you portforward port 80 to your internal LAN IP?

You'll need to do that for others to access your website from the internet.

Your problem looks similar to another one described here.

So it might help if you try the same solution: Within your DIR-645 configure your webserver as "VIRTUAL SERVER" instead of configuring a "PORT FORWARDING" rule.

If this works, maybe this is a possible explanation of the problem, and hence both DIR-645 and DIR-655 suffer from that.

I have the same problem - it seems to depend on the ISP and/or the modem/router - with my previous provider I was able to connect to "myself" without any problems - when I changed to BT Infinity and used their BT HomeHub 3 router I couldn't connect using my external domain name - only with an internal IP address.  I don't know of any fix for this behaviour.

This new modem you have, does it have a built in router? If so, then your in a Double NAT condition.

I have the same problem - it seems to depend on the ISP and/or the modem/router - with my previous provider I was able to connect to "myself" without any problems - when I changed to BT Infinity and used their BT HomeHub 3 router I couldn't connect using my external domain name - only with an internal IP address.  I don't know of any fix for this behaviour.

Seems like your dealing with Double NAT.

BT Infinity uses a separate VDSL modem and BT HomeHub 3 router whereas before I had a single ADSL modem/router box.
