iTunes Server -- creating playlists
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:01:24 PM »

Maybe I'm just asking for trouble here, but in an effort to try and manage my household iTunes I turned on the server on my 320.

Prior to this I had just connected to it as an NAS.  I didn't (and still don't quite) see there's any advantage to using the iTunes server software, but I thought I'd give it a shot to see how it works.

But while it's "cooking" (building the media library) I started reading the web and seeing that one BIG drawback to using an iTunes server is the inability to create playlists in iTunes.  Since nearly all that I do is built around Genius and Smart playlists, I'm now thinking I just wasted a whole lot of time turning the server on.

So I guess I have two questions:

1) What advantages, if any, are there in using the iTunes server on the 320 versus just accessing it as a networked drive in iTunes?

2) Do I really lose the ability to create Smart playlists and use Genius playlists (I often build smart playlists based on Genius lists)?

TIA for any assistance.

can't answer your questions directly, but I created playlists for each album/cd single and the iTunes server does see these and share them.

never tried to create a playlist on my mac to music held on the NAS so can't help beyond the above.

(ps thought iTunes server was buggered now with the latest updates to iTunes?)

I have no experience on Playlist, but I turned on my itunes server just yesterday and works fine with fw 2.03b and itunes vers 10.6.1.  :D

the only drawback is that you cannot (easily) have the cover art on your itunes NAS ..
