Hello-

Big fan of DLink, but I have come upon an issue.  I recently switched from DSL (dumb modem) to CABLE (Modem that acts as router). Since this SBG6580 is a router also, it does not seem to work well with the DIR-655.  I have called my new provider, and they tell me they cannot touch the DIR-655, because it isnt there. Lame excuse. Regardless.  I want to keep my DLink, but I cant make it work with SBG6580.  I have seen several posts, all with several different answers, and none have worked for me. 

I have changed the IP of the SBG to be different subnet then my DLink.

No matter what I do, at first, client connections, wireless and hard-wired, are fine for a little bit, then they basically fall off.  if I reboot both devices, the same thing happens.

If the 6580 has a DMZ you could use that option to put the 655 in and possibly use.
Having two routers on the same line causes Double NAT.

I use the SB 6180 which is a modem only. If your ISP supports the SB 6141 or 6180 and you don't need the additional features of the 6580, I would go with a stand alone modem.

It does have a DMZ option, so what IP do I put in it ?  I just replied to one of the other posts you commented on.

The 6580 is what they gave me.  I switched from DSL to CABLE, but currently have my DSL plugged back in, because i cant get my DIR-655 to work.

Connect a wired PC to the 655 while it's connected to the 6580. Look at the Status/Device Info/Wan section. What ever IP address you see there, input that address into the DMZ on the 6580. If the 6580 also has Reservation options, I would reserve the IP address the 655 gets on the 6580 so it doesn't change. That should work well for you.

Only other thing you can try if the DMZ option does work> Turning a router into an AP.

I actually tried this, by disabling DHCP....worked for a couple days, then I had to reboot everything.

I was just thinking....If I plug a wired PC into the 655 (NOT plugged into the WAN port of course, juts a regular port), while the 655 is connected to the 6580, the Status/Device Info/WAN section, shows the IP address of the 6580, which is 192.168.1.1

That 192.168.1.1 is the internal network of the 6580. It was 192.168.0.1 but i changed it to try and be different than the 655.  So I'm trying to figure out how putting the internal network IP of the 6580, into its own DMZ, will make it work.....Just thinking out loud.

What is the WAN or Internet IP address say on the 655, not the gateway. Gateway should be the IP address of the modem which could be .1.1. The WAN IP address should be 1.something other than .1 under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Input the WAN IP address that seen on the 655 into the DMZ on the modem.

Thats what I'm saying, the WAN ip, under Status/Device/WAN section hows the internal IP address of the surfboard, which is 192.168.1.1

Ok, maybe then that is correct, seems odd that the modem would give the .1.1 address and not something different. Well, at least it doesn't conflict with the 655 address of .0.1. What does the Gateway address have? Samething? It should be the same I wouldn't think...

Can you fill in the following information from the 655 Status/DeviceInfo/Wan section while the 655 is connected to the modem??

I'll have to boot it back up to tell...gatewya meaning the SurfBoard, correct ? In one of the menu's it does get its own external IP, but the internal IP is 1.1, and it dishes out DHCP ...

WAIT...sorry.....it gives the 655 a WAN IP of of 192.168.1.111, because its a DHCP address according to the SB6580.  So, I did try before to set a DHCP reserrvation on the 6580 of 192.168.1.111...didnt work, BUT, I did not put that IP it gave the 655, ito the 6580's DMZ.....

There we go...yes 192.168.1.111 should be what you should be able to reserve on the modem settings and input this address into the modems DMZ.

The Gateway: listed on the 655 should be 192.168.1.1
