DIR-835 and Homegroup troubles
« on: June 06, 2012, 02:19:08 PM »

Hi Everyone,

I should preface this by saying I know diddly-squat about networking beyond the basics, so please speak slowly and clearly.  :)

I just purchased a new router, D-Link DIR-835, and I'm having trouble connecting to one of the computers on my homegroup.  All was working fine on my old wireless G router from 10 years ago just prior to the upgrade, and if I switch back the problem goes away so I'm thinking there's something in the settings for the 835 that I need to tweak.

My homegroup consists of my desktop PC (Windows 7 64-bit), Asus laptop (Windows 7 64-bit), and an Asus netbook (Windows 7 starter).  The desktop is connected to the router via ethernet cable, the laptop and netbook wirelessly.

I can access the files on the netbook from the laptop and vice versa, but neither can access the files on the desktop, and it can't access the other two.  The desktop appears in the homegroup, but when I try to access my files I get an error saying the network path could not be found.

I have removed all the computers from the homegroup and recreated it, and still the same problem.  Could this be an issue with the hardware firewall?  I really don't know where to begin with this and was hoping someone could help me out.

Thank you!

I might not use the HOMEGROUP as a network sharing feature as I've heard that it can impact sharing correctly.

Some things to try on the routers web page:
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, I appreciate the help!

I might not use the HOMEGROUP as a network sharing feature as I've heard that it can impact sharing correctly.

I'm just looking to share files and a printer attached to my desktop.  Is there a better way you could recommend?

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Done.  Only had to reseve the IP addresses and change the firewall settings.  No luck after the changes.

I set it up using wireless N only.  I thought that was best if all devices are capable of N.  Changed to mixed G and N - no luck.  Security is WPA2/AES.

WISH, WPS, and the rest were already off.

Any other thoughts?

Again, thank you very much!

I would create a work group name, can be any name. Enter this into windows System Properties under Computer Name. This name will need to be set up on each PC. The share out each folder that you want to share out. Give either specific permissions or open it up to everyone depending what your security needs are. You and share out folders by right clicking on the folder and selecting Sharing. Here you'll find options to set up sharing, input a share name, how many connections that can access and permissions. There might be a wizard as well that can walk you thru this. This will share the folder.

For printers, I'll you need to do is to set up the printer that is connected to your PC and share it out. If you right click on the printer in Devices and Printer, select Printer Properties. This will bring up another window. Select the sharing tab and follow the instructions there. Then you'll need to setup the printer on each PC thats being connected to for printing.

If your printer supports a on board network wired connection then you wont need to share the printer out as each pc can connect to the printer using the IP address it gets from the router.

Thanks again for the detailed reply.  Did all that, and same results - can't find the network path to the desktop.

Tried D-Link support, not much help either.  I think I'll just return it and go back to my old router for the time being.

Thanks a lot for trying!  :)

This is a end user configuration issue and not HW related. Good luck.
