I just purchased the DNS-323, upgraded to 1.06 before doing anything, installed 2 1TB hard drives and formatted and configured in a RAID 1. After copying over my media files and then activating the iTunes server and the UPnP server, iTunes streaming seems to work just fine, but my xbox will not see the 323...
I have turned on UPnP support on my router, and my xbox used to be able to see the PlayOn media software that I tested on my PC just fine, but it just doesnt seem to pick up the 323 at all. I have clicked refresh on the UPnP page and waited a few days to see if it would populate, but still no love. Any ideas?

Try resetting the DNS-323 to factory defaults then log in and enable the UPnP AV media server and save settings. Now see if you can see the DNS-323 from your Xbox360.

OK, did that yesterday afternoon. Before I went to bed I could still not see it, but by this morning, I did see the folders and could play a couple songs, but no videos.
Get home this afternoon and now the xbox doesnt see the 323 again.
Went to my PC to make sure I could see the files and I can.

Xbox is hard wired through a switch, and I am sharing a media folder that has videos in a folder beneath is and music in a folder beneath it.

Try the simplest layout first.  Just share out one folder with one file in it.  Once you've verified that works, start adding more, one file type at a time.  And beware of special characters!

It could be that some of your videos or music are "corrupted"

Meaning that the file could be playing fine on your computer, but for some reason the DNS
does not like it and sees it has corrupted.
And once the DNS sees a corrupted file, it stops scanning the rest of the media files

At the moment there is no way of knowing (that I know off) which files are detected as corrupted


Also for the problem thatyou XBOX does not see your DNS, did you do a "Reset to default"?
and how did you did it? through the physical button on the back of the device, or through the button in the device web page.

I would  recommend doing it via the physical button on the back, hold it for about 30 sec.
then reconfigure your settings....
And just activate uPnP and start adding the files like i said previously.

Also keep in mind that the XBOX does not like very long filenames and special character (dashes, spaces and underscores are OK "- _")

I'm having the same problem as the OP.

My 360 can detect my 323. I added some video files to the "media" directory and it found them. I then added the rest of my media files (around 500 gig worth) and it appears to play them fine (tested random files).

But as soon as I copy over my Mp3 and Picture directories into the "media" directory it won't reconise the 2 new directories that I've added (mp3s and pictures).

Any ideas?

I know on the PS3, i had a folder called "Music Video's" and it wouldn't appear because of the ' ... not sure if the xbox is the same, as soon as i removed it everything was working

might be something to check

Yes, make sure that you don't have any special characters like " ! # $ % ^ & '

in you file name try using only letters, numbers, dashed (-) spaces and underscores (_)
avoid all the rest....

Some test needs to be done to know which characters are "undesirable"
I know for a fact that "&" causes the xbox 360 to "not see" all files/folder on the same level

I've given up. The 360 can still see my movies, but doesn't matter what directory I set as uPNP server, the 360 only detects my movies folder, even if I set the uPNP folder as something totally different, the movies folder is the is always there!

I reset it within the web browser and also turn off the power to the system, nothing!

So if one of my mp3 files has a "&" character, the folder won't be seen? I'm sure alot of mp3s have that symbol in it.

If the folder does not have the & symbol you will see the folder but when you access the folder you will see no content available even if only 1 files contains the & symbol.

Well my folder doens't have any "&" symbols and I still can't see it.

The funny thing is, with all the uPnP setting changing and folder moving here and there, there was a stage when I actually saw my MP3 folder, then it disappeared.
