Recommend a router
« on: April 02, 2009, 09:06:28 PM »

Hey guys,

I want to replace my existing router with a Dlink, but im not sure which one to go for. I was planning to buy the DIR-655, but want to make sure its the right one I need. I have 1 laptop, 1 desktop n a PS3 that share the signal. My computers get a fairly strong signal, however my PS3 gets a very poor signal of just 30-40%. It's quite far from my router, so im looking for one with great range that can give my PS3 a strong signal n speed.

I know it sounds weird to get a new router just for a PS3 but I been wanting to get a new router for a while now. I have a wireless mouse n a keyboard n two 5.8ghz cordless phones....

What router would u guys recommend??

Thanks

p.s. this is the router im currently using: http://gigaset.com/shc/0,1935,hq_en_0_138495_rArNrNrNrN,00.html

I'm going to try to explain this as easily as possible.

This is a forum, people coem here because they have problems with their products, not because they want to brag about how well their working. Of COURSE your going to see complaints about the products here, thats what this forum is for.

Second, lets say that there are 100 users on this forum that are having problems with the DIR655, (and thats WAY higher then the actual number), that would be less then 1% of the units sold in the last 3 months.
So yes, it does seem like the units have problems, and for some people they do, but to assume that everyone is having the same problem as you is incorrect.

That being said, the 655 is about to get a new firmware, 1.30. We're being told you can't down grade from it so we're trying to make sure it's perfect.

Assume you have wireless G running the PS3.

I love my 655 and also have a 625.  Unless you need Gb wired LAN, the 625 has the same functionality in the router firmware as the 655.  The 625 basically only lacks the GB LAN of the 655.  The 655 powers my home while the 625 is the weekend house.

I use the 625 along with a DWA-642 laptop card and a TRENDnet TEW-638APB 300Mbps Wireless N Access Point in order to always have N speeds wireless.  PS3/XBox only need G speeds.  So if only the PS3 is connected with a wireless G adapter, the 625 and 655 will operate at G speed.  If you have the PS3 at G and the 642 card in a laptop, the speed will also be G as the 625 and 655 are not dual independent band.  The DIR-825 is a GB LAN dual band.  By adding the Trendnet, eventhough PS3/Xbox only need G, my 625 operates at N speeds.

The 625 comes with a free 642 card at Newegg for $60.  The 655 is ~ $93 and the 825 can be had for ~ $130 street price.

Some folks have issues here and there with any router.  I am very pleased with D-Link and recommend D-Link.

Disregard the 'review' from ShawnTRD. He is taking his own issues to some kind of generic level. Sorry to hear about his issues, but look on any manufacturer forum and you will find people with issues.

Anyway, I would advise you to go for the 655. Great wireless signal and plenty of ways to streamline traffic.
Do keep in mind that 'a poor signal' not noly depends on the router, but can just as well be caused by environment, concrete walls and other neighbouring AP's.

See? Not everyone has bad experiences. Sometimes hardware just doesn't work in certain environments.

A lot of the problems are always the result of the end users configuration of their computer and equipement, they environment surrounding their network, and of course, lack of knowledge and common sense.

People are very quick to blame everything and everyone else but themselves.

You have the same gateway that I have, using Aliant as the service provider. You will not see any signal gain by exchanging out wireless gateways. As stated in the above paragraph, you are going to have to re-think your networking environment. 40 percent signal strength is fine. I am sure your connection rate is fine as well. If your only using the PS3 for online content, you will be fine since internal wireless connections are in most cases, much greater than downlstream internet connections. There really is no need for mega super fast speeds on a gaming console, unless your hosting a lan party or using the ps3 to stream multimedia content, even then, your fine for DVD quality content.

Yes, i've had my share of problems with the dir-655, but they were not significant issues, and of course, acutal issues with the environment and the other computers and the people using those computers. The only significant problem I had with the dir655 was the shareport feature and in my opinion is a very bad implimentation of sharing resources using that usb port, however, that is my own opinion, and I don't use it, so problem solved.

If you are only getting a wireless router, to try and increase connection reliability to your ps3, I would instead suggest purchasing a repeater, otherwise, I would recommend a gateway that does simutaneous 2.5 and 5Ghz frequency. All my gaming consoles are hard wired, I turned off the gigasets wireless radio to reduce interference.

D-Link has disabled some basic functionality through firmware (up)grade
releasing new firmware that disable downgrade is in MY OPINION
MORONIC and SIMPLY CRIMINAL This can be a good basis for a class action suite against D-Link
I don`t like ranting but I finally think it`s necessary to give a clear signal to the people responsible for these kind of crazy acts.
I used D-Link products for a number of years and frankly I can`t recommend this brand anymore.
Look what happened to CREATIVE and learn a lesson!

By the way this is not aimed at LYCAN ( who I truly rerspect ), but this is aimed at D-Link sales and marketing department.

I have two DIR-655's, and A2 and an A3, and they run great. For a consumer router, the DIR-655 has a lot of features. One of my networks has more than 20 devices on it. Both networks are rock solid.  I have PCs, servers, DVRs, media streamers, smartphones, cameras, printers... many accessed through LAN and WAN.

That said, the features are complex enough that if you move from a simple setup without studying first, you can cause problems. And there is no such thing as a 100% bug-free router!

As Lycan says, as in any user forum, people experiencing problems here are over-represented, and some have an axe to grind... I take them with a pinch of salt.

I love the 655.  :)  Don't let a disgruntled someone sway your opinion.  You'll have the best experience with your PS3 if you don't mind moving your internet connection to the same room as the PS3.

Also, on NewEgg.com, 81% of reviewers gave it a 4 or 5 egg rating- 66% gave it 5 eggs alone.

There are always going to be BadEggs™ out there, but they're few.

I like the dir655,  but for some reason, i feel it hasn't filled that empty void in my life. Still wishing it would have the capability at making coffee in the morning.

Thing about that is, there are release notes available for the code that you can read through. If you don't like what it's going to do, don't install it.
Just sayin.

Release note have previously been lacking details.  As with the 615 (B2) firmware update 2.25, the release notes indicate QoS service was added.  However, most QoS support info, in the Knowledge base, are for the advanced versions of QoS.  I have not found any info on the limited QoS version that now exist in the 615, which is not "tunable."

Easier said than done. Ususally someone will like one feature and not like having something taken away. That person is torn then on what to do.  I still am on the 1.11 ms beta one and I have no problems with this router. Only thing i wish could be easier to configure would be the wake on lan. My wireless works like it should, does not disconnect. My router uptime goes on for months. Dir655 best way to go if u just need wireless n or g. IF both are needed get the 825.
