DIR-645 no internet
« on: June 25, 2012, 06:18:42 PM »

Hello,

I am struggling to get my DIR-645 running again. I had it working fine, until I tried to change the configuration. I know that I should never change a running system, but unfortunately I did... >:(

I have a distributel DSL modem providing great access to the net, when directly connected to my laptop (or another laptop I tried). I also have a DIR-645 (FW:1.01) reset to factory default and hooked to my modem (Internet) and Laptop (LAN1 or 2 or 3 or 4) using ethernet cables. I can access the setup screen (192.168.0.1) and go to all the menus, but I can't make the router to provide internet access to one of the available Computers (Laptop1: Win7, Laptop2: Ubuntu, PC: Win7). The internet setup Wiz is set to DHCP and is not able to identify my internet connection. The internet light, the WLAN light and the power light are all turned on on the DIR-645.

I don't know what to do next, as I have set it up before and I am running out of options...

Thank you for y our help

Marcus

Welcome!
What region are you located?

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Hi again,

Thank you for the set of things to try, but unfortunately I have not been able to access the net via the router….

> What region are you located?

Ontario, Canada

> What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

It is a stand-alone Zhone 1511

> If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem.

The modem is set to 192.168.7.1 providing the Laptop with 192.168.7.3 and proper internet access via DHCP when directly connect. The DIR-645 is set at 192.168.0.1 providing 192.168.0.100 to the laptop, but no internet. Both setup menus can be accessed at the quoted IP address. As said before, all lights on both devices are on correctly. Is there a set of parameters I should try on the two devices? E.g. to set modem to 192.168.A.B and router to 192.168.X.Z ? Would there be any benefit to use the setup CD for the configuration? I could find myself a Laptop with Win7 and a DVD drive. Once I get home, I will also copy the ‘Status’ page from the DIR’s menu here.

I have tried all this and more, but nothing helped. I don’t think looking at the wireless setup is going to help, since I can access the router’s menu with no problem when connected by cable. This is getting frustrating, since I have been with no wifi at home for about a week and I have no idea how to fix the problem. The router used to work perfectly fine; I had 6 devices connected with no issue but now it is getting to a point where I am thinking of simply buying a new router and selling this one on Kijiji…. :(

Thank you for your assistance and best regards,

M

WE need to see if we can get your ISP modem bridged or use the DMZ on it for the 645. Might help. It's preferred to let the router handle the PPPoE connection with the ISP Modem. You've got 2 routers right now.
