Cosmetic Differences (or more?)
« on: April 06, 2009, 07:54:58 PM »

I just received a DIR-825 from Newegg.com.  The box says it's hardware version A1.  The router has a white band over the LEDs, unlike the images of the DIR-825 I see on most sites.

That is, I have this:

Versus the following, which I see almost everywhere else:

My question is: Is the unit pictured on the bottom a different hardware version?  If so, what (else) has changed?

From what it looks like the bottom picture is a different revision. I do have an engineering sample of a rev B that is coming out and looks like the bottom picture.. but not sure if that's how the finish product will look like.

Until you pointed it out I'd never noticed the difference.  Mine is the same, purchased from an eBay vendor a month or so ago (new, still sealed).

If there's a new version it would probably be good news in that D-Link probably plans to support the 825 with continuing firmware updates.  I'm just hoping when 802.11n is officially standardized our routers can be updated with the final standard.

Till then, let's just assume we have the 'good' version.  :D

Cheers

I'm crazy, so I ordered another DIR-825 from a different vendor, expecting to get the other type of unit.  (Since they picture the unit as shown in the bottom picture above.)

What I don't get is how it could be a different revision, yet "B" hasn't come out yet.  Could it be A2?  (I'm not sure how D-Link revisions run.)

I'll probably test the speeds of the two and see if there are any differences.  Yeah this seems nuts, probably, but I'm so sick of dealing with routers having lousy performance that I'd rather just do it now and get it out of the way.

Also, since reading about the upcoming B revision being open source, now I'm also wondering if a month after I have this thing set up, a new version will be out that supports third-party software (which I would rrrrrrreally appreciate).

Yes, my forum ID has changed.

I received the second DIR-825 today.  It's identical to the other in terms of the box, hardware version, and firmware version.  AYE, AYE, AYE!  Boy is my face red.

Still wondering about the B revision and open source.  If I'm happy with this unit, I'll just buy another down the road...

It is probably bad news rather than good news.  The B revision will use a different chip and will sport open source firmware.  I very much doubt this firmware will be in any way compatible with the A revision, so we'll be stuck with the existing 1.01 firmware.  Maybe they'll continue to update the A version alongside the B, but I'd be very surprised.

Looks like we lucked out: Firmware version 1.10 is now available for the A hardware (just installed it today).

I don't see it here.  I suppose you found it through the firmware's automatic update function.

Oh wait--I have to go to a third-party site to find it and see release notes, since I'm not currently using my DIR-825.

They posted the firmware, then pulled it off the site, then re-posted it today as "Beta".

The saga continues...

OK, thanks for the info.  Looks like I'm calling 800-390-1119 tomorrow!
