Drive Mapping disappears
« on: April 07, 2009, 04:22:09 PM »

Hi

I bought a DNS-323 a week ago, have it all configured with 2 500g Seagate drives, they work fine. I mapped the 2 drives to Y & Z, after a while, I get " Y(orZ):\ is not accessible. Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied"

I'm using firmware 1.05, a 3com 10/100 switch.

I can still access through IE or netscape, no trouble setting config or users.

I cannot download from a local networked computer, if I restart manually or through IE, I can then access the mapped drives again, but not download.

I phoned Dlink & they told me the DNS has to be plugged it to a Router.

Help please.

This device does not support domain networks.

Thanks for a useless answer. Doesn't help a bit.

Is this a domain network configuration? Where you able to access both volumes at some point in this configuration? If it was working at some point did you try restarting the unit from the web interface Tools <System <Restart?

From my original message"

"I cannot download from a local networked computer, if I restart manually or through IE, I can then access the mapped drives again, but not download."

After a bit the DNS-323 seems to go to sleep & never wake up the drives.

I upgraded to ver 1.06, now I can no longer access config through IE at all. if I restart, can still access drives until it goes to sleep, then have to restart it again., but still no config access at anytime. ESU does not work, latest version, didn't work from the start.

What ECF is trying to politely ask you is:  are you using the 323 at work or at home?

Your original post indicated that you were disconnected from your shares for the reason:

Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied"

That tidbit of information would lead an experienced user to believe the 323 is being used in an Active Directory domain instead of a workgroup.  If you can tell us more about the network you're using the 323 on, then we can help-- otherwise comments like:

Thanks for a useless answer. Doesn't help a bit.

Won't get you far here.  This forum thrives on mutual respect of the OPs and Users.  ECF was being nice.

Apologies, I'm about fed up with this box.

I have run different setups a 100 times. It is a workgroup setup with 2 computers at home, (but used for business), it is supposed to be used for automated backups every night.

All is fine, (except downloads), "IF" I restart manually or through a browser. Every time it seems to go to sleep, I will get a different message. Now it says "drive disconnected  connection not restored.  BUT I can still access through a browser.

Very frustrated.

What OS are your computers?  Are they set to go to sleep?  Do you have NIC power saving enabled?  Do they have a custom power profile (if you're using Vista)?

The DNS-323 doesn't go to sleep, ever.  The drives are permitted to spin down (which D-Link calls HDD Hibernation) when they're not in use.  However, the SMB server in the 323 is stateful and keeps track of connections regardless of whether or not the drives are spinning.

I use XP Pro SP3, (32 bit), on both computers. When the sit long enought, they will hibernate by them selves. I beleive NIC power saving is enabled, the machines will wakeup if a request is sent. I do not have any trouble accessing either computers at any time. If I turn on the 323, hub & computers it will work fine for a long time, 3 or 4 hours, but then, it seems like the 323 looses connection with the drives. Windows says path not found, the connection has not been restored. I can still access the configuration through Internet Explorer, I can still access the download section, (but not download from a local computer), I can set downloads to copy from one volume to the other, (but the computers cannot access the volumes on the 323, and can access r the other computer).

Can you try it eliminating the hub from your network?

Ok, will give it a shot this weekend. It WAS attached to a 10/100 3com 3c16610 SuperStack switch, I've since replaced that, (on hopes things would change, but didn't), with a DGS-1008D. I also bought a DIR-825 Router, but have not tried that yet.

Will post a message with the direct connect results soon.

Thanks.
