PPPoE Connection Issue

First of all, let me just say that my router is about 3 months old.. tops (so this shouldnt be happening right..)


Ok.. for the first three months it worked fine... dropped connections a few times, but reconnected quickly.

This past week, however, it dropped the connection and couldnt reconnect.
Now it wont connect over PPPoE.

I put the correct pppoe settings on, and all it says is "Establishing..." and then after like 20 seconds it says "Disconnected" again.

It never goes past the Establishing point.


I have tried EVERYTHING (well, hopefully not everything..):
- Restarted PC
- Tried configuring the router using the wizard on the disk
- Tried configuring the router manually
- Tried resetting the router
- Tried using default settings
- Tried downgrading firmware from 1.21 to 1.20

NOTHING worked. It keeps failing to get past that "Establishing" part.. it never connects.


BTW i know its not the modem... cause well.. I am on the internet right now (obviously) so the modem works (its also dlink btw)...


I was able to connect with the router using DHCP, but it is the most unstable connection ive ever had. it drops connections every 30 seconds!

and yes, i sent an email to dlink tech support like a week ago, and still no answer (this is after calling them and hanging up cause i couldnt take it anymore).

Other details:

DIR 655 Revision A3
Firmware 1.20
Running a 10mb connection on G only (have tried other settings, but no success)
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit



ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Who's your service provider?

When you connect directly to your modem what if the IP address you're pulling from the modem? ( you can just list the first two octets)


What brand is your modem?

ISP: GVT (Brazil)

modem IP: 192.168.xxx.xxx

it is a DLINK DSL-500B

the router was bought in the USA, but im using it in Brazil. moved here a few months ago.

I'm not familiar with that Modem but like most of our Modems here in the USA you will need to bridge the modem in order to use the router. Whats happening is you're double NAT'ing. So if you're familiar with putting that modem in bridge mode go ahead and do that.. If not contact Brazil's support line.

well.. how have i been using the router in pppoe the last 3 months without any problems and just now it goes haywire on me?

wouldnt that indicate that theres nothing wrong with the modem?

I basicly followed the intructions that came with the modem and then followed instructions on the router.. and it worked out fine for 3 months. now this.

could you explain what you mean by double NATing and how would i fix that?

(ps: this is a pic i got on google.. it is the same config page, but it is not MY page.)

Don't wat to be rude, but you might want to try Google for some understanding of this (common) network issue (Double NAT that is).

issue solved...

i had a phone line problem and my ISP sent a tech to fix it; furthermore i also had the double NATing issue, and after setting the modem to bridge, the router worked again.

I had set the modem to bridge previously and tried the router, with no success, but that was because my phone line was defective.

I hate double NAT. What I would like to have is access to the dir-655 config and the seimens gateway config by typing in the appropriate ip address. ie: dlink=192.168.0.1 and seimens=192.168.2.1. Seems the only way I can do this is through double NAT, however, then I come into the problem of verifying proper server access by domain name, which times out, outside the lan, and internally brings me to the siemans setup page (with no access of course) and forwarding the appropriate ports in the seimens to the dir-655 doesn't work. I thought of one work around which is making the dir-655 function as a router only, but then I loose all access control and QoS functions. Oh wellz!
