Please help with setting up DIR-655
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:16:36 PM »

??? Well, I am out of things to try. I have set up more than a few wireless networks in recent years but have reached the end of knowledge. This is for a friend and tonight she is without anything, internet, Magic Jack, and DirectTV on Demand. I have scoured this board and found some helpful tips but nothing is helping me. I am unable to access the Dlink from here tonight but will do my best to describe my issue and maybe you can help. The cannot keep a wireless internet connection on any of their machines for more than a couple of minutes. The signal drops completely and then starts again where they have to reattach to the wireless network. They are using Win 7 and XP. The Magic Jack plugged into the LAN port is having the similar issues.

Should be simple. Their network consists of a BEC dsl modem in bridge mode. A Dir-655 router. A Dlink Dap-1522, a couple of wireless laptops, a DirectTV wireless bridge and a Magic Jack. The only thing plugged into a lan port on the DIR 655 is the Magic Jack.

The DIR is surely a version 1 because I bought in 2008 but it has been updated to the latest firmware. Since the modem is in Bridge mode (verified), I have set the wan port up as having a dynamic IP address, filled in the appropriate DNS server IPs. Do I need to use unicasting and do I need to clone the MAC address of one of the laptops? On the wireless side I am using channel 6, (very remote location), using mixed G and N, 20mhz channel width. I have all security off until I can get past these issues. On the network side, I have left the ip address of the router to default 192.168.0.1. Enabled DNS Relay. Enable DHCP server with 100 addresses in the range. And checked the Always Broadcast option. I added a DHCP reservation for the Magic Jack phone thingy and forwarded the neccessary ports there.

One the advanced tab, I followed a few suggestions here in another post and disabled Short GI, set the NAT ENDPOINT FILTERING to Endpoint independent. Disabled Enable Traffic Shaping and QoS engine.

I disconnected the DAP until I get the rest of this working for them.

I am going from memory since I don't have access to the router right now. But does anything stand out to you that I might have missed? Do you have any suggestions on what else I might try? I am brain dead from thinking about it. Kind of a newb so proceed with care!

Thanks so much!

If the ISP modem is in bridge mode, then I believe you need to use PPPoE as a connection type on the 655 router for any DSL bridged modem connections. The 655 router needs to handle the PPPoE acct and connection while the ISP modem is bridged. The router needs to authenticate with the ISP thru the modem since authentication being passed thru the modem to the 655 router.

Once PPPoE is set up and ALWAYS ON is selected. Save settings and power cycle the ISP modem and the 655 router, then you should have internet connectivity.

Fuzzy-I called the ISP about that and they do not use PPPoe. They said they provide a semi static IP for their customers. The customer had a BEC modem / router and swapped it out the other day for a modem that was set to bridge so that they could use this DIR-655. I am befuddled.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
