DIR-655 B1 Seems to be bricked
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:36:08 AM »

Hello All,

I've tried looking everywhere and I cannot seem to find an answer that works.  I have two DIR-655's, one is A4 running 1.35NA and works fine, the other is a B1 and was running 2.06NA.  I was having some trouble routing between the two of them and users connected to the B1 were complaining about flaky wireless and name resolution.

I checked out the website and saw that 2.06NA was not even listed so figured that there may have been some issues with it and is no longer available.  After downloading 2.07NA and trying to upload it to the router, I had lost my IP address but maintained link on my NIC.

On the DIR-655 RevB, the Power light comes on flashing orange, then goes solid after a few minutes.  The wireless light is off and pressing the WPS button does nothing.  The only other light that is on is LAN1 when connected to a device.

DHCP does not appear to be running, but if I specify an IP address of 192.168.0.x (not .1) mask 255.255.255.0  and browse to 192.168.0.1, I get a "Firmware Upgrade System" page that looks very similar to my old DI-624 (when doing a hard reset, it needs firmware to load again).  But this screen is not accepting firmware, it gives an error stating that the .bin image file does not match the Hardware ID.

I've tried everything I can think of, tried every version listed on the website, even tried the 2.08NA beta firmware.  Tried using TFTP to push the file to the router, but the transfer attempt always times out, not even sure if its getting anywhere.  I cannot ping 192.168.0.1 from any device connected to the router, right now it is essentially an unmanaged gigabit switch, and I'm very unhappy :(

If ANYBODY has ANY tips or things I could try, please help.  I have already called D-Link and they have done what they can and suggested RMA, but I think that may not be an option for me for this device.

I recommend you try to downgrade using v2.03NA using the following procedure:
FW Update Process

If this fails then you'll need to contact DLink support and RMA the unit.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for the reply FurryNutz.  Unfortunately I am not able to get even past step one in the firmware upgrade procedure.  When I go to log into 192.168.0.1, all I see is "Firmware upgrade system" followed by "Version 1.0.0.2" and has a browse button with a file path and a Send button.  No matter what firmware I have tried, I am getting an error that states it does not match the hardware I D.

I have however been unable to find downloads  the beta .90B00 NA  firmware, and cannot find 2.04, 2.05 and 2.06 firmware.  I would like to try the 2.06 since that is what it was on before, but could not find it even on the dlink ftp server.

Update:  Still a brick :(

Try this: Emergency Recovery Mode

If this doesn't work, you'll need to RMA the router.

Thanks again FurryNutz.  I had tried this for several hours last night and nothing :(  I had found these steps on other sites as well, some had screenshots that showed "Dlink Rocovery Mode" instead of the "Firmware Upgrade System" I am seeing.

I will give this a try again when I take lunch. I work from home so might even be able to try in a few minutes if I'm not busy.

I fear I may have a brick now :( all I have as far as proof of purchase is the device info that was on the box.  Cut it out as the box was destroyed during a move.

If anybody has a copy of the 2.06NA firmware, I'd like to try that as it was the last working firmware on the router, but I cannot find a download for it anywhere :(

I guess if I can't get it RMA'd, I have a gigabit switch now.

v2.06 doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Not sure why. I would use v2.03NA is it's a good working version and is available.

That is what I have been trying to use, mainly that and 2.00 as it was the installed firmware when it was shipped, but the page does not accept either firmware.

Looks like I have a brick :'(

Thanks for the support

Keep us posted on how it goes if you can get into Recovery Mode or you have to RMA it. Good Luck.

RMA is a no go.  The router itself does not seem to respond to the "Reset" button, so I don't think it is ever actually getting into the "Recovery Mode" that people have mentioned.  I don't have anything that D-Link considers "proof of purchase".  I think I'll be upgrading to a DIR-825 tomorrow, I like the idea of it supporting DDWRT.

I guess now I have a pretty decent gigabit switch to use to expand my network with, that's about it :(

Thanks again for the support, I'm new here to the D-Link forums, dont know why because I have been using all dlink products for years now, with the exception of a few on-board NIC's.

In the thread I started I asked about why the router's web interface firmware checker gets you to 2.06. I could download that and send to you if you still have the brick and want to try again.

Please do not post links to un-official D-Link sites for FW.

Sorry the RMA and Recovery Mode didn't work.  :(

Its been a sad couple days :(
But I am cautiously optimistic about the DIR-825 and actually kind of excited about it.

I love my 825. On v2.07NA now. Been good so far.
Wish you could get the 655 going, would be a good AP for you.  :-\

I still have a working 655 A4 that I was using to connect my work computers and servers to the network, but now its taken the place of my B1, and my old DI-624 is connecting my work stuff, 100Mbps and 802.11g make me sad :(
But, I have a feeling that the 825 will make me happy again :D
