drive formatting hangs at 0%

Hi,

I have two seagate 500mb drives.  One seems to have failed and I am now trying to reformat the remaining drive.

before i used it, i put it into a PC and reformatted the drive to ensure it works.  The problem is now the NAS doesn't format the drive, it either says no drive present, or when i click on drive configuration, it opens a block that first said initialising (no problem) and now says formatting, but is stuck at 0%.  There is no activity on the NAS.

Please advise if you have any ideas.
