Old print servers & 825
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:43:48 AM »

Hello all,

Just joined. I just purchased a D-Link 825 Dual Band router this past Saturday. This router replaces my Netgear WGT-624 which has worked flawlessly for many years until lately.

I have ATT Uverse service and have no problems between the gateway (modem) and the router and the router between computers and internet.

However, I have certain legacy (they're old!) devices which I require for business purposes that I don't want to upgrade.

There are three (3) D-Link DP-311P wireless parallel ports which connect to: HP lazerjet 4 letter and legal printer, Epson 1200 A3/B3 printer, and an HP 130 all sizes up to 24x36 printer/plotter. Also a D-Link MA-111 wireless usb which connects the network to a computer in a different room, but, this computer gets its internet directly from Uverse.

On the WGT-624, I ran an open network only using MAC filtering. Now, several new networks have sprung up in the area, I need security.

I can't get the D-Link router to see or connect to these old devices. They don't seem to work with WPA or WPA2. I would rather not use WEP or any security on these devices as they would have to be re-programmed. I still have the disks somewhere, but, I need to see these devices to re-progam them.

Router is Version B1, F/W is 2.02NA. Computers are 2-W7 Pro, 2-XP Pro, 1-Linux, and 1-old W98SE. All are wired except 1-W7 (laptop) and 1-XP uses MA-111 for network access only once a month. MAC filtering does not work on these so far.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice. Thanks in advance.

Your probably dealing with legacy devices that do not support WPA or WPA2 security due to the fact that they were produced before WPA was. In that case, those devices would need to be changed out for newer devices that support the newer WPA/2 security standards which is preferred as WEP still works however can be compromised easily.

I would recommend checking out DLinks web site for any replacement print server products or calling DLink sales and asking about updated print server products. HP also makes print server products I believe.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the response. I knew I would need to step down to WEP, but, I was hoping someone had a "magic" idea.  I will just move the 2 printers most needed to my already cramped office and use direct cable connections.  Purchasing new print servers is out of the question, I only need to do this work for a couple more years.

You might want to consider using some powerline adapters to get network to other areas instead of using Wifi. These work thru the 110v wall outlets and you can connect them to anything. Would be good for just using printers and such.

Thanks for the feedback, good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the discussion -- I 'm thinking that I have a similar problem?

I upgraded to a DIR-825 two days ago from a DIR-655 when it failed follow a storm induced power outage.   I did not use the wizard on the CD to set the new router up but did it manually.

I used WPA2 security (the new router is Ver. B1, Firmware is Ver. 2.02NA)

I  have seven computers (all desk top; 3 WIN7 & 4 WINXP) all attach via cable to the router.  Three directly attached to the DIR-825 and four attached via a switch.   All computers can get on line OK.

I also have a home network and all the computers used to be able to could access a Brother HL-2170W laser network enabled printer (the printer is probably 5 - 7 years old).   With the new router none of them can.   Question could go around by attaching the printer via USB directly to the router?

I have a second question if I could.  When I brought the new router up all of seven of my computers can "see" each other -- but now only five of the seven computers are now on our home network -- two were assigned to a "public network".

Since I did not assign them to a public network I am wondering how the DIR-825 made the assignments and what I can do to redirect the router to bring the other two computers into our home network. (BTW one of the "miss-assigned" computers is WIN7 and one is WINXP).

Thanks for any assistance!  :)
