S.M.A.R.T. Drive status on Dns-321 / WD green drive failure
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:23:06 AM »

Is there any way to check the Smart status of a drive inside the dns-321? I am wondering because of a potential problem with using western digital green drives that enable head parking.  Apparently when used with a Linux based system such as the 321, the drives park the heads excessively and can cause premature drive failure.  When checking head load / unload cycles in the smart menu, you can see if your drive is affected.  Here are some references:

Not with the official firmware however this feature in in our beta code and should be available in future firmware releases.

So basically, this is a WD-inspired problem, right? They decided to take it upon themselves to implement a nonstandard way of having heads park, and also claim they don't support any OS unless it's from MS or Apple? Additionally, the problem is only with recent "Green" WD drives, not the latest model series, no? Sounds to me like someone needs to fuss at WD, not Dlink. Perhaps WD has a firmware update for their nonstandard drives by now....

Folks:

I would appreciate (especially from someone at WD) the answers to what I think are a couple simple questions.  If I have these drives and they are doing their own power management, is the correct solution to just turn off power management in the 321?  If so does that mean that they will manage head parking but will not turn off the motor when the drive has not been accessed? Or would they do that too?

   A recommendation would be appreciated.

   Thank you.

Since I don't have the drives on hand yet I can't give you any SMART values in the device to base any factual information on. If someone has them and is willing to provide the smart data using the beta firmware code we have provided it would be leaps and bounds of help while we work our own methods of resolving this if it is in fact an issue with our device.

Info from my Western Digital Green Drives  Model # WD7500AACS

Also, what Temp is the Beta supposed to turn the fan on?
My DNS 321 has been up to 107 degrees and the fan didn't come on.

Eddie

Info from my DNS-321 installed about 1 month

Description:  DNS-321
Beta 1.02
System Temperature:  113°F / 45°C

My fan turns on at 46°C and runs for a little while then shuts off @ 44°C

What is interesting is that the hard drives report a much lower temp

 WDC  WD10EADS-00L5B1 - 100°F/38°C
 WDC  WD10EADS-00L5B1 - 100°F/38°C

Smart Info:
Drive 1:
193   Load_Cycle_Count   200   200   0   135

Drive 2:
193   Load_Cycle_Count   200   200   0   128

Hope this helps.

Craig

So based on those numbers and the amount of power on hours, it may infact not be affected by the LCC issue.

Temperature should not have changed for on..... 107degrees is actually pretty low.

cdkone,

what is your current 'power on hours' number?

Here are the power on hours:

Drive 1:
9   Power_On_Hours   99   99   0   743

Drive 2:
9   Power_On_Hours   99   99   0   743

Just as an FYI, I don't use the device for anything but a storage device. I do not have any of the other services or servers running

D-Link Multimedia,
Here's a little more information
Last night I copied the "My Documents" folder to the DNS 321 with the Beta firmware.
I used a slower 54 Mbps wireless connection to give the drives more time for excessive head parking
The hard drives are 2 Western Digital Caviar Green drives.  Model number  WD7500AACS
Volume_1 is RAID 1
Volume_2 is JBOD

The transfer was about 1.16GB, 6,503 files and 587 folders to Volume_1 and took a little more than 10 minutes.

Both drives had 150 Power_On_Hours at the beginning and 151 hours at the end.

Slot 1  Load_Cycle_Count was 55 at the beginning and 55 at the end.
Slot 2  Load_Cycle_Count was 71 at the beginning and 71 at the end.

Regards,
Eddie
