DGL-4500 Wired connections stopped working overnight
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:51:35 AM »

I know this problem could probably be resolved by doing a hard reset of the 4500, but because the only connections I currently have are wireless, I am worried about doing it without confirmation that it is likely to fix the wired problem.

My network:
- 4500 running v1.15 firmware.
- Wired network to my desktop mothership and a printer. (Both of these connections broke overnight.)
- Wired connection to a D-Link 323 NAS. (Still works, on all network connectors.)
- Wireless to 4 other machines. (All still OK.)

This morning, when I started my main box, the boot time was extended and after it did come up no network was to be found.

I duplicated the slow boot and no network on one of the laptops by switching it from wireless to wired.

Tried all the normal fixes:
- Cycle power to router.
- Restarted computers.
- Swapped connections.
- Etc
-> No luck.

My system has been running faultlessly for about 5 months, then this happened.

What gets me is the fact that the D-Link 323 NAS is wired and is still working???

Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so how did you fix it. All suggestions welcome!

Thanks

I have been running my router about the same amount of time and just last week it stops comumacating with the cable modem. I guess I've been lucky in that power on and off gets it going again. Odd, just out of the blue after 4 or 5 months and it quits 3 times in a week and a half.

Hi:

I picked up the 16 Bete earlier today but without a wired connection I am nervous about burning it in.

Do you think the wired ports will be restored if I go back to factory settings?

Thanks

Do NOT flash the firmware over wireless.

AND!  Always BEFORE flashing you should restore to factory defaults by holding in the reset button for 30 seconds.

Thanks for the confirmation!

I guess it is going to be "Push and Pray" - Hopefully my wired network connections will be restored after the factory defaults are back.

I will feedback what happens

Hi again:

My daughter has finished her essay - so the way was clear to reset the router.

The result is - No change - wired connection to Dlink 323 NAS still works, still connected to Internet through wireless connections - but wired connections still fail.   >:(

Tried swapping the wired connection to another port while watching the "Wired" status monitor on the 4500's display, it echoed back exactly what I did. So the 4500 is seeing the connections. Somehow the connection is simply getting blocked.

After resetting, with no wired connection to be had, I was forced to reload the configuration file using a wireless connection.

When this went to completion and everything seems to be as previously programmed but there was an error message saying that the confguration file was corrupted.

Was this because I loaded it from a wireless connection or was the file actually corrupted?  ???

I have a couple of earlier copies of config files I could try, but would have to load them via wireless, which seems to be a bad idea.

What are the methods available within the 4500 to block wired access?  ???

As stated in my original post, this problem arose after shutting down the wired computer overnight - no modifications were made - simply started up not working.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Are you getting an IP address at all on the wired computer?  Is it a private address or LAN IP?  Private being 169, etc.

If you plug your computer straight into the modem, does everything work?  I'm wondering if your NIC is dead.

Thanks for the quick responses guys - I found the problem:   :D

A program called Accurate Network Monitor by HHD Software.

I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal.

I had installed it to try to find out what was causing up to 30 Gb of uploaded data per day, it looked good.

I guess mom was right (Again) - looks aren't everything!

Weird symptom!

Thanks again.
