DIR-655 with Airport Express
« on: July 24, 2012, 05:17:07 AM »

Anybody have any luck using an Airport Express to stream itunes music wirelessly?  I'm able to get the AE setup and can stream for about 30 minutes but then it can't be found.  I'm assuming the 655 is kicking it off.  I've tried changing settings on the 655 but nothing seems to make any difference.  I'm able to use an Apple TV/iPhone/iPad with no issues.

Very frustrating.  Is Dlink just not compatible with the AE?

655 is revision B1, firmware 2.07.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What mode is the AE running, AP or Bridged.
Ask other users on the Apple forums?

I've tried those settings and initially it works but after 30 min or so the AE is unavailable.

It's set in Bridge mode.

I've tried many different settings suggested by others and none work. It's very strange.

What wireless modes and channels are you using on the 655 and AE?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Correct. I can stream music just fine but it stops after 30 minutes or so and the AE can't be found with iTunes or the Airport utility. However, if I enter the IP address in the Airport Utility it will find the AE. But I have to reset it for it to be found by iTunes.

Both are set as mixed g and n. There are 2 from my neighbors. My Apple TV works just fine with the 655. The AE must be doing something the 655 doesn't like.

Make sure each one is using a different channel, set a manual open and free channel. Try the AE at 1 and the 655 at 11.

Interesting. I have both set on auto. Shouldn't they both be on the same channel?
I want the AE to join my 655 network.

No, each wireless radio needs to be on a different channel. They can be the same SSID name and password however channels has to be different. This will definably cause interference and the wireless to stop running.

I have a Airport Extreme that runs in AP mode, it's on channel 6. My main host router runs on 11.

I see. I'll have to try that after work. Thanks for your time.

Let us know how it works out.

Seems like if it working for a while, then stops, then this is probably what is going on. Shouldn't need any more configuration.

For some reason when I change the AE to use a different channel it reverts back to whatever the Dlink is using.  I even changed the Dlink and the AE automatically picked the new channel.

The AE has to be on the same channel as its streaming music from iTunes. I'm not using it as an access point or network extender, just in bridged mode. At any rate, none of the settings I've tried make any difference. Just for kicks I hooked up my old Linksys WRT54G as my primary and the AE worked just fine.

I'll be returning the AE for an Apple TV.
