Hello there,

I just thought I'd share my Winamp and Media Player woes with you in the hopes that it helps someone at some point. Basically, whenever I would play MP3s I would constantly hear a "slowdown" of the MP3 or choppiness during playback. Obviously I figured it was background processes but after reviewing Process Explorer I found that DPC was spiking right during the times that the playback was sluggish. I grabbed DPC Latency Checker from http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml and sure enough, it was spiking way above normal.

Basically, it appears that the problem is related to the use of Windows Wireless Zero Config and D-Link's drivers. If you disable Wireless Zero Config you won't have any issues, but then you also won't have network access as the wireless card will drop.

The fix: If you are seeing red spikes in DPC Latency Checker during playback of your MP3s, go download the latest drivers and let the D-Link utility manage your wireless connection. The problem should go away completely.
Being required to run manufacturer software utilities to do something Windows can do is complete BS! Windows is perfectly capable of managing wireless networks for us, and it is especially useful in cases when you are using two wireless cards or two manufacturers. However, in this situation it definitely resolved the issue. If you have more than one wireless adapter/manufacturer things get tricky, so D-Link still needs to fix this.

Sidenote: I've noticed a wild variation of link speeds when usiong Windows' Wireless Zero Config utility, however when you use D-Link's manager software it is appearing to keep me at maximum speed. Whether they are just not reporting the numbers as accurately as Windows is is another issue, but at least it looks like it's working better ;)

Hope this helps someone
-D

Do you have rev. B? I do, and got the latest drivers directly from the ralink website:
http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Windows.html (USB RT2870)

I used the latest that D-Link has bothered to bundle with their own software, 2.1.5 that comes in the box and is the latest for download from D-Link, and my wireless connection would randomly drop. This one from ralink seems to be working just fine, and you have the option of installing the drivers only and no extra BS software ;D
