no luck attaching drive on usb

hi there

I am mostly happy with the 320, not the  fastest, but fast enough to stream its contents over my home network.
however, I have had no luck at all connecting a USB drive to it

questions are:
1. is there a max size of drive I can connect
2. is there a particular file format it supports for usb drives.
3. how to I actually browse to the usb drive over the network.. ie  Iget to the 320 by \\ShareCentre\volume_1 ... but there is no \USB_Drive or such..

any help much appreciated

Welcome to the forum, natty! I don't use an external HDD on mine, but you likely will have to format the drive in the web interface before you can use it. Try poking around the Web File Server app in Applications and see if you can find your USB disk.

I have a freeagent 750gb drive attatched to my usb port. You need to do a full format of the drive in FAT32 (not FATexe). Plug it in the sharecenter and hold the usb button in until the usb light starts to flash. Can take a few seconds and then a further time to mount. Then in windows use the Dlink easy search utility locate the usb drive in the bottom box and map it to your computer. You should be able to read & write the drive. The only draw back is the drive is open access ie if you access the drive via ftp it will all ways show up as a permanent network share.

DNS-320 support filesystem formatted in FAT-32 or NTFS so there is no need to reformat your external drive. As a matter of fact there is no option to format the external drive from the NAS webUI in the first place.

External drive will appear as "USBDisk1_x" and appear along side Volume_x when access via UNC or Network browse. It is read/write enabled but doesn't appear under the NAS Web File Server application.

Take note that it does take a number of seconds for the NAS to recognize and mount the drive so do wait for the USB indicator light to come on before proceeding. You can also verify if the drive is indeed recognize by the NAS from the Management->System Info->USB Information.

Not according to the manual...at least with 2.02 firmware...

It is not necessary to press the USB button when connecting the USB disk - just wait until the USB LED comes on "solid" to indicate the USB disk is ready
Pressing and holding the USB button for a short while while a disk is connected will initiate the "USB copy" function - whereby USB disk contents will be copied into a folder on the hard drive
Pressing and holding the USB button until the USB LED starts flashing is one way of safely ejecting the USB disk (USB LED goes out when it's safe to unplug the drive)

Refer to the chapter "USB copy" towards the end of the user manual.
