Slow wired connection - wireless ok
« on: August 19, 2012, 06:24:37 AM »

I originally installed my DIR-655 as a wireless access point, not using the wired ports at all, and it worked fine like this.
Trouble with my trying to set up my Bell router/modem with port forwarding prompted me to change my configuration so my Bell router /modem is now only a modem, and I am using the DIR-655 as a wired as well as wireless router.
I have a separate network server and so don't use the DHCP on the DIR-655, and I only use one port to connect to a separate gigabit switch that serves the network.

I am finding that the wireless connection works really well with the few wireless devices I have connected (mainly an apple tv, and a MAC book) but my wired connections to the internet "feel" slow, sometimes with a significant delay before links to sites are established. I click a link, and wait for several seconds before the site shows up in the browser; sometimes after that the same site seems to respond at normal speeds, other times there are added delays.

Is there something in the DIR-655 settings that would cause this? The wireless connections seem fine.

Should I be looking at a new router/modem (rather than separate boxes)? If so what would be the equivalent D-Link model?
Thanks ...

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

If your on DSL, the 655 can and should handle the DSL connection just fine.

Hardware Version is A4
Firmware version is 1.32NA,  2009/07/09
Location Ontario Canada

Turned off Traffic Shaping
Advanced DNS services is already off
I've not been able to find any reference to Gamefuel ....

Reset Firewall UDP and TCP to Endpoint Independent.

Don't suspect the cable between modem and router, because the wireless is working fine.

You say "If your on DSL, the 655 can and should handle the DSL connection just fine" - I am right in assuming this is ONLY a router, and I do need to use an ADSL modem to connect to the phone line - right?

I will see how this works. I also changed the WAN port speed to Auto - it was set to 1000 - and this alone seemed to make a positive improvement.

Might check your wired PCs to make sure they are set up well. Disable any 3rd party firewall software on them as it's not needed with using external routers.

If the modem in in bridge mode then this is all you need.
I will see how this works. I also changed the WAN port speed to Auto - it was set to 1000 - and this alone seemed to make a positive improvement.

Keep us posted. Good luck.

I think I know what the problem was ....
At some point the WAN speed setting was changed to 1000 Mb/sec. Looks inocuous, after all I'm running a Gigabit switch - except this is the WAN setting, not the LAN setting, and my modem is only good for 100 Mb/s.

That's why when I changed the setting to Auto, the problem went away.

I can now set it to 100 and it should work just fine. Is there any advantage to using the stated speed setting, rather than having it auto-negotiate?

If you know the the highest speed an ISP modem can do, then setting it manually should work well. Usually either way works however does help in troubleshooting to test manual. Just know that if something goes wrong between the router and modem and if you have it set to manual, you should review this setting at that time and switch back like you have done here to see if it might help resolve the problem. Most ISP modems now days do support Gb WAN speeds. Most people just leave it set to Auto. Hope this help you out.

Enjoy.
