I came home today and noticed my wireless device in the living room wasn't accessible.. so I went to login to the router only to find someone changed my password.

I'm guessing they used the reset button in the back.

They changed settings and gave a computer whom I don't want to have access!

Is there no way to stop that?

As of right now my Girlfriend is mad because I pulled the router off and only my computer is on the internet. I won't allow her on if she's going to let on someone I don't want to use my internet.

Is that the only way into the router with the reset button? Maybe they guessed the password, but I doubt it.

I know it's not advisable, but if I open the router and disconnect the reset button will that prevent any future problems? 'Cause I'll do it. I'm at a loss right now. Here it is the weekend.. and I have off all next week. I don't need to be arguing all weekend about this issue and have to worry all the time.

I'm about to open the router and disable that reset.

I hate to mess up a brand new router.. do I really need to remove those small black feet on the bottom to get at screws or does someone know if it's something else?

Now that I am thinking.. if I disable the reset button, will they still be able to just unplug the power and it will lose my password?

Wow are you people serious? Re-emburse you for the product that is designed and built to have a reset button for emergency purposes helps users recover factory settings in case something happens? Really? EVERY mfr that has a router has this reset button.  :o

It's not up to DLink nor is it DLinks responsibility on how users handle these routers after they are purchased. Would be like a Car Mfr trying to tell you who can and can not drive your car after you purchased it. Wow.

So heres the deal and brilliant idea, find a place or office room that can be locked where the router can be placed, used and connected and then put a lock on the office door. Maybe tell your GF not to touch the router? Put the router in a ventilated enclosure/cage of some sorts that's lockable? Yes you can open the router up if your careful enough and maybe some how disable the pin hole from being used. I would make disabling the pin hole good enough that you don't cause the in-operation of the router should you need to use the reset button. There is a good reasons why it's there and has 2 uses, factory reset and recover mode. Should you need this, try to make it available to use at some point should you need it.

Honestly, you need to find a good way to prevent people from accessing the physical router, lockable room or closet would be preferred.

Good luck man. WOW.

Don't lump me in with the refund guy.. I never said that. I know routers have a reset button. I was just overly worried thats all.

My solution is that I went to Harbor Freight (cheap tool store) and bought a small plastic box for $4.99 and a lock with key. Metal and wood even would cut down wireless signal, while plastic is better I'm told. I don't have a drill, so a friend across the street made holes in the box.. the antennas stick out, ethernet and power cable, and we drilled some extra holes for ventilation.

Will see how it holds up in there, as it's the only place I could secure the router. My bedroom closet could be idea, but it's not only my closet but hers too.

Good idea locking up the router.  Never even thought about someone useing the reset to hack into someone else's router...  Let us know how the plastic case does with heat etc.  I am interested.
