Replaced hard drives now can't access data
« on: August 31, 2012, 07:52:37 AM »

Hi all

I had my DNS320 up and running with just 1 drive in.  It had ALL my data on so I decided to try RAID 1 so I bought 2 new matching drives and a caddy to put the original drive in as an external back up.

I have put the 2 new drives in and formatted to RAID 1, didn't take long but now I have my original drive in a caddy with all my data on and no way of accessing it.  When I plug it into my computer it says it needs formatting, I assume this is because the DNS320 has formatted it using its own file system.

When I plug it into the DNS320 it brings up the USB light on the unit but I don't know what to do next?  Is there a way to see the data before pressing the copy button on the unit?

Help please! Newbie to NAS but fairly well versed otherwise.

The HDD from the DNS-320 was formatted using the Linux filesystem. To see your data, you will need to place the HDD back in the DNS-320. The DNS-320 will not be able to read the HDD from a caddy plugged into the USB port.

Place the HDD back in the DNS-320 and make a backup of your data (if you don't already have one) to an external storage device/PC, then copy the data back onto your RAID array.

Thanks JavaLawyer, I will do that, I was hoping to avoid a copy then copy again situation, very time consuming but if that is the only way then I shall make a start.

Next lesson, I think I need fun plug and Twonky to get help my Xbox see my pics and vids but I have ABSOLUTLEY no idea what they are and how they work!  Maybe I should start a new thread when I have everything else back up and running with my data!

Looking forward to working with you all  8)

You might be able to miss one copy operation if you use an installable file system driver (see the sticky on data recovery (windows PCs)).

Using an IFS you plug the disk into your computer and copy from it to the NAS.

Thanks Ivan,

I've read the sticky and it says "These applications require physically installing the ShareCenter hard drives in a Windows PC."

Do you think it would work with the drive in a caddy?  I guess it is no hardship to install it in a PC if not.

If your caddy is one of those that hot plugs into a computer i.e. the disk carrier slides into a holder mounted in the computer, then you won't have any problems.

If it is a USB caddy then it should work but you may find that you will need to copy blocks of files rather than the whole disk at once because of USB limitations.

We have used both methods here to recover files and disks from damaged equipment.

The easy thing to do is try and if you don't encounter any problems go ahead with the copy.  After the copy has finished test what you have on the new drives and if everything is OK you can reformat the old drive and use it as a backup drive for your data.

Take care and you should not encounter any problems.
