Slow Xtreme N Speed
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:29:24 AM »

ok I wasn't sure if I should put this in the router or adapter sections, but here goes

I have the DIR-655 and a DWA-552. I also have other things using g network. I am getting very good Internet speed from the g network things but I get horrible speed from the N network. If I set my router to G only I get decent speed on my DWA-552 but if I switch it to g and n or just n I get really bad Internet speed  I have been testing my speed here www.speedtest.net

g I get max speed of ~ 8 Mb/s
n I get max speed of ~ 1.5 Mb/s

I do not have any cordless phones though I guess my neighbors could? What do you think could be causing this?  this is my Router settings when I get bad speed

Mixed n and g
channel set to 11 ( I have tried other channels to no avail)
transmission rate is set to best
channel width is auto 20/40

and I am running with WPA2 only and AES. When I connect to N I can get the 300 Mb/s but my actual Internet speed is horrible and very erratic. could it just be interference? maybe from a neighbors cordless phone? or is there something else causing the issue on the n network?

Distance, obstructions from router to receiving end?

There are obstructions(walls) and it is about 20 feet away but I get decent speed with the g network. it is only bad when I connect on the n network...I guess I can just use the g network but then why did I pay to have the n?  just wondering if it is something I did or n network is not as good as g?

I guess it is something you did, since n works great over here.

Have you tried pointing the antenna's differently, installed the latest drivers? Ho many wireless networks are surrounding you (which channels do they use)?

There is about 25 other wireless networks surrounding me...only one other is using channel 11 which I have mine set too. Most are 6 and 1..  I have all the latest firmware updates I am at 1.3 on the router and 1.5 on the adapter. I have tried moving the router as close as possible without much difference.

And G gives you what speeds?
Are the speeds measured with Windows Vista?

Can you quote the wireless connection stats in the router setup please.

I think I found the issue...you were right something I did... I have an external antenna from my old adapter ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2175853&csid=_25 )that i thought I could connect to the output of the DWA-552 apparently I can't or at least not the way I did...anyone have any idea if I can use this external antenna on the DWA-552? I figured it wouldn't matter the antenna I used..maybe I need to connect them in a different order?

Hard to say. The essence of wireless N is that the antenna's play a major role in obtaining the reach and speed of the radio transmitters. I can imagine that when using this antenna there is no convergence. This differs with every manufacturer. What happens when you use the standard antenna's?

it works a lot better and is a lot more stable...I would just get a better signal strength with the extended antenna. oh well it was worth a shot....thanks for your help

actually my speeds are still a little bit slower then running on the g network...it is def faster now

more like 3 Mb/s

though on g I am getting 6-7 Mb/s   all with the stock antenna.

These are internet download speeds according to www.speedtest.net

so I have no idea though I get a better signal on the n network although the speed reduction is pretty bad.

g gives me speeds on the router of 54 Mb/s and n varies from 270 to 300 Mb/s so I guess I will run with g for now..unless someone has any other ideas as to what could be causing the issue?

Are you talking about LAN speed or WAN speed? If WAN speed: what's your ISp speed / subscription?

I am talking WAN speed.

on LAN I pull the 8Mb/s internet speed   I pay for 6 Mb service though on LAN and on g I am getting about 7-8 Mb/s

Go to advanced wireless and disable that extra protection mode if not already done so. As well in the device status, on the wan side does it show any errors? The wireless side check too. You will always see errors on wireless, but reboot the router so that logs are cleared.  Run speed test on whatever mode your on. Write down dropped packets and errors on the wireless end. Change mode reboot repeat exact same steps. Trying to keep it in a controlled environment.

Suspected so....this is no wireless antenna or so issue!
Since your 655 does not connect you to the internet the issue may well be with your gateway device.

I have exactly the same problem.
My DIR-655 has FW version 1.21
The DWA-552 has driver version 1.50.
The connection distance is only 20 feet!!! The DWA-552 is on a Windows XP home preium with most updated service pack.
I could only get 2 bars on the status display screen most of the time.
The speed test would give me 17.12 mbs download and 0.44 mbs upload.
But why just two bars?
The setting on the router is exactly the same as stated by Stinkfist.
