Exactly how do you log in to network shares???
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:57:00 PM »

I have never gotten this to work, so I gave up on it some time ago.  I simply shared everything (default settings) since we were a small firm that was more like family.

However, now that our firm has grown, I really need to begin isolating some parts of our files from the staff (financials, salary listings, etc.).  So... I log into the DLINK, create one share that's visible to everyone and another share that only I can see.  I had previously created a name and password.

Anyway, the one share works great--everyone can see it.  However, when I click on the protected share, a log in box appears (as I assumed it  would), and I type in the user name and password but it does work.  I get a box that says:

\\dlink-d900f4\Protected Files is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource... and blah, blah, blah.

I have Googled the hound out of this to no avail.  However, I did see a post where one guy asked about whether-or-not the computer name was appended to the user name.  Well, I had tried creating a "group" that could use this folder and used that user name first.  So now when the log in screen comes up is has my computer name\group instead of just the group name I typed in (I choose the "Use another account" option below it to try to log in).  Is this why it isn't working?  Is it sticking the computer name in front of my log in name thus changing it?

I just don't understand the whole workgroup and domain thing.  All I have is a workgroup set up here... no domains.  Any thoughts and/or suggestions?  Thanks so much!

A couple of ideas because I assume you are using windows and we don't have that here.

Your share for everyone is just a set of folders and not the whole of Volume_1 I assume.

Your protected files are in a separate folder on Volume_1.

You have deleted the shares you setup at the beginning and have made the two new shares.

If you are sharing all of Volume_1 to everyone then your restricted share is redundant.

Look at those things and you might see the answer you need.  If you have two completely new shares and nothing of the old one remaining and are just getting a password problem then you need to look at how windows, assuming you are using windows, handles passing passwords to the nas.  I saw a password problem that was caused by the password being setup in all caps with the computer sending it in lower case which was rejected.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit on all PC's... some with Windows Home, one pro and one ultimate.  I have never understood domains and such... it seems like you would simply enter the username and password that you set up for the user on the D900F4, but no such luck.  And as I mentioned, it adds in the computer name as the "domain" in front of the log in name.  Maybe it would work if I could get rid of that???  I'm stumped.

Try this

or google search "Windows 7 NTLMv2 authentication NAS" as there are lots of potential causes/fixes.
