FurryNutz, Please Help
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:03:31 PM »

It's been a long time since I posted and you were very helpful to me before and I'm hoping you can help me again. I'm having a problem with using Vonage with this router or so I think.  Since the DIR-655 has no phone port for Vonage I used the Cisco router that came with Vonage and ran a wire into a port of the DIR.

So the phone goes into the Cisco router which then goes into the DIR.  It's worked pretty good since I got the DIR but the phone keeps going down and I don't know if it's the Cisco router or the DIR.  What I do to get passed it is pull the power cord on the Cisco router and sometimes that resolves it and other times not.

Sometimes I reboot the DIR and that resolves it but sometimes not.  Tonight, I tried pinging the phone router from the DIR and got no response and I can't get the phone going at all now.  I know the way I have it hooked up isn't the best with the phone having to go through two routers.

I know there is a better way to hook Vonage up and get passed this.  Any ideas that I can try?  Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Hans

So let me get an idea of how your devices are connected...
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
ISP modem>DIR-655><Cisco Router<>Vonage device?

If this ls correct, I would first try inputting the in IP address the Cisco router gets from the DIR-655 into the DMZ on the DIR-655 under Advanced/Firewall. If the Vonage device gets it's own IP address from a router, I would not use the Cisco router, and connect the Vonage device to the DIR-655 using the LAN ports between the two, then inputting the IP address the Vonage device gets from the DIR-655 into the DMZ.

Looks like your having some double NAT issues here with having 2 routers on the same line. The DMZ should help keep the  Vonage phone service going well for you...

When I used a AT&T Microcell I had to use DMZ and it worked well when I had it.

Theres a Vonage FAQ as well:

Keep us posted.

I have a stand alone modem from Time Warner, not sure of make because I'm not at home.  Ethernet wire goes from modem to DIR and I have an ethernet wire going from the Cisco router into port 4 of the DIR so the phone goes through two routers.

I can't get into the Cisco router to change or check anyhting because it won't let me in when I input the IP address.  Is there a way I can eliminate the Cisco router and go directly into the DIR with my phone?

Thanks,
Hans

If the Vonage device has support for a wired LAN cable, then yet, bypass the Cisco router and connecting directly to the DIR and input the IP address it gets from the DIR in to the DMZ on the DIR. I would contact Vonage and ask them about the device and if it can be directly connected via LAN cable to the DIR and use the DMZ. I think it should work if it supports a LAN connection.

If by chance you can't bypass the Cisco router and can't get access to it, Just find the IP address listed either under Networking or Status/Device Info on the 655, if you can find the IP address, input that into the DMZ and give it a go.

I believe the IP address is the default one.  I still have the guide that came with it and that's what it says it is.  Not to sound stupid, but can you tell me where that DMZ field is you're referring to so I can give that a try?

Thanks,
Hans

Hey Fuzzy,

So I tried entering the IP address into the DMZ and that seemed to help getting a dial tone and dialing out but when I call in the phone doesn't ring.

What do you think of this;  can I take the ethernet wire that comes out of the modem and put a splitter on it and branch off to the DIR and the Cisco router independently?  Would putting a splitter on the modem and going into two routers degrade modem performance?

I notice the router has an unused USB port on the back.  Can I just take a USB phone adapter and connect to the router using the USB port and bypass the Cisco router entirely?

Regrads,

No, the USB is for data between the router and client side devices. IT doesn't have any connectivity to the WAN side.

Are you sure all the settings on the both routers are correct? Seem like it's just about there. Your getting OUT, but not getting any ring IN. I would check all the settings on the phone to make sure. If the Cisco's IP address is in the DMZ on the 655, you should be good to go. Nothing else is needing configuration on the 655. Only thing I might do is reserver the IP address the Cisco gets from the 655 on the 655 under Setup/Networking.

I agree with you, it all seems there so I called Vonage and the kid who helped me was very helpful.  Here's what we ended up doing;  I now have the modem cable going into the Cisco router, then I have an ethernet cable going from the Cisco router into the DIR's modem port.

Everything seems to be working, the guy from Vonage didn't think it was a good idea to have the Cisco router second in line.  We checked the internet speeds and it was the same off the DIR as before so no performance loss.

He's sending me a new router as the Cisco one is 7 years old and could use an upgrade.  He said in hindsite that when I got the DIR I should have done it this way to begin with.  My phone and all devices are working so I hope it stays that way.

Thanks for your help very much, I appreciate it.  I see your name all over the place here.  Mind if I ask how much time you devote to this forum a week?  Whatever it is, I'm grateful you're here.

Sincerely,
Hans

Glad you got it working. I guess for Vonage users, this will need to be the case, having the Cisco router before the DIR router. You could use the 655 as an AP by Turning a router into an AP if the Cisco is going to be the main host DHCP server and router. If this is the case, I would probably turn the 655 into an AP since having 2 routers on the same line will be problematic.

Good luck and enjoy.
