Firewall Throughput?
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:09:48 AM »

Hello

I have a D-Link DI-LB604 dual wan router that's connected to Virgin Media and BT Infinity connections - each of which I can connect to at typically 94 and 72 Mbps respectively using speedtest.net. When I test them through the DI-LB604 though, they both run slower - at around 49 Mbps.

This has been fine up until now as Virgin has only just upgraded our speed from 50 to 100 Mbps and even 50 Mbps is lovely and fast but with speeds now seemingly getting faster than the DI-LB604 can cope with
I have been looking at upgrading to the DSR-500N.

One thing I'm puzzled about though, is that the spec says the firewall throughput is 70 Mbps, with a comment that "The maximum Firewall plaintext throughput is based on RFC2544 testing methodologies."

Is anyone who uses this unit able to tell me whether the DSR-500N is limited to 70 Mbps - and if the figures given by speedtest.net are comparable with the plaintext throughput based on RFC 2544 etc?

Broadband speeds are only going to get faster with both Virgin and BT talking about way beyond 100 Mbps so I don't want to buy a new router now that won't really go much faster than my current one.

Thanks in advance.

I would contact D-Link sales or support, level 2 maybe and ask them about this. I don't have any experience and this is a limited class router so not a lot of use for it in SOHO platforms. I think D-Link should be able to handle this question. Let us know what you find out.

Hello and thank you for the reply.

I'll contact D-Link in the UK to see what they know, I spoke to them the other day but their business tech support was unavailable and consumer support didn't really know the product enough to say.

I also just saw your piece on recovering from a crashed firmware upgrade - very useful to know.

We have a whole range of D-Link products at home like the DNS-323 disk unit and DSM-510 media players so D-Link is always our first choice when we need something good.

I know not many people have dual wan routers at home but it's a pain if your one and only connection goes down for any real amount of time so when you can justify it it's a nice luxury.

Thanks once again.

Kind regards
