DIR-655 Rev B Horrible Wireless Speed
« on: November 12, 2012, 01:36:16 PM »

Hello,
I've been trying to find a response or a fix to this issue for a few weeks now.

My DIR-655 RevB router is currently at firmware 2.07NA, and has speeds of around 30Mbps down and 10Mbps up when connected directly through wired connections.

However over wifi, I am only getting around about 5 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up.  I've tried the 'usual' fixes suggested on here, change broadcast signal to manual, not auto, shutting of QoS shaping, all of that.

However nothing seems to be improving the speed.  What am I missing, or is this router junk now?

(I'm currently using mixed N/G wireless signal, automatic transmission rate, and 20 Mhz channel width)

How are you testing the speeds? It's always recommended to test speeds with a another PC connected to the router. Wifi speed testing is always not accurate as many other things can effect Wifi, like external environments, interferences and configuration. If your testing with external places like speedtest.net, usually speeds should appear as what should be expected however not knowing the conditions of the servers and other factors of speedtest.net, these can also effect how results are posted.

Why it's always best to test speedtest.net using a wired connection and for WiFi, test with a wired PC, all security and programs running in the back ground turned off on this PC so you can get a more accurate of file xfer speeds between them, then you'll see what your WiFi and network speeds are really doing.

Any other WiFi routers near by? How many?

Also client side HW drivers should be updated as well
Turning off client side security SW might help as well. Seem many programs like AV and firewalls effect network performance.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Only about 2-3 other routers in the area, and the PC that is I'm trying to get better speeds on is maybe 10 ft. away from the router itself.  I've tested the wired speeds on speedtest.net for the previous results, both wired and wireless, including on another laptop.  Both computers seem to indicate it's something with the router itself.

The only security program I have running is ESET Smart Security 5 and the speed is unchanged whether it is on or off.

Has a factory reset been performed and the router set up from scratch?
How about checking Short GI? ON and OFF?
Turn OFF things like WPS, WISH and are you using WPA2 and AES only? AES only is supposed to have the best performance. I would test with WiFI security OFF as well as a test.

By using WP2 and AES only I've been able to boost my speed to 10Mbps down which is slightly better.  Still unsure why this is occurring as a week ago or so I was able to get around 20Mbps down with no issue via wireless.

I might try it with a factory reset.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

What channel are you using, 11 is best. And since you have others around you, what channels are they using?

What speeds do you see if you were say 4-5 feet away or in same room as router?

I would think that if you saw 20Mb last week and now your not, something possibly externally to your environment could have changed the conditions. What speeds are you connecting at, look at the Status/Wireless page on the router. I would test speeds with EVERY other device turned OFF cept for one. You you connecting at the supported maximum speeds that each device supports?

Tried a factory reset, same settings as before, around 10 Mbps.  Cable service, Stand Alone modem, and the modem is a Cisco... something.  Charter no longer allows its customers to use their own modems so this one was provided for me, brand new.  This is the one I've had for a while now, which was getting me speeds of up to 30Mbps anyway.

And I am currently using channel 11.  I scanned the other routers and they're all on different channels.

I'm in the same room as the router.  I'm curious now if it's maybe some sort of interference from a cordless phone from a neighbor as I've read those can affect the speeds of the wireless signals as well.

For what it's worth, the receiver on my computer is only Wireless G so it'll most likely be only getting around 20 Mbps max at best conditions as is.

Yes cordless phones can impact WiFi routers if they are using 2.4GHz radios.
