Error - device permissions change at random
« on: November 13, 2012, 05:10:34 AM »

Hi all,

I have noticed over the last few months that I can log in to the DNS and copy files onto it, then after about half an hour the user permissions seem to change.

Specifically, I am able to write to the root folder of the DNS volume, but not to any folders on the drive.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this, or how to prevent it?

Thanks,
David

Are any other DNS-345 owners experiencing this issue?

I also noticed another issue that may be relevant to this problem.

In the network browser (e.g. Finder, Explorer), I see two devices that relate to the same DNS-345 unit:
"NAS1HG" (which is what I called the NAS during initial set up).
"NAS1HG_AFP_Volume_1" (which is some random thing I've never seen until recently).

The NAS1HG device has my two volumes (Volume_1 and Volume_2) plus their respective recycle bin shares. The NAS1HG_AFP_Volume_1 device only has a share for Volume_1.

Any ideas what this is for? I can't interact with the NAS1HG_AFP_Volume_1 device at all; I always log in to the NAS1HG device.

I suspect that this may be related to my original issue. Whenever I mount the NAS1HG Volume_1 share, and then open a folder to copy things over, a second instance of the Volume_1 share appears in My Computer/Finder.

I use the AFP protocol (as I'm on a Mac), but what is curious is that this only occurs for Volume_1 and not Volume_2. Perhaps not coincidentally, I don't have any permissions errors with Volume_2 ever.

Ok, figured out what the second device was for. The AFP service is for Time Capsule (an OS X backup utility). I don't use it at all, so I disabled the AFP service and the second device disappeared, as did the second instance of Volume_1.

I am now able to read and write to the original Volume_1 seemingly without issues. Will advise if the issue returns but for now, it seems to be working just fine. :)

I was going to suggest that the volume may have been related to an App. The newer ShareCenter models create a dedicated/separate logical volume (off of Volume_1) for P2P downloads, although the volume name you posted didn't seem to sync with that idea. One mystery solved.

Thanks for giving me the idea to go and look at the P2P settings (which I thought was disabled). That's what made me look at the AFP settings. :)
