Dir-655 hardware A3 firmware 1.21
« on: November 17, 2012, 05:19:28 AM »

I have a DIR-655 (hardware version A3) which is running 1.21 firmware.

When I check the firmware from the admin screen, it tells me I am on the latest firmware but 1.21 is from 2008 I would have thought there was something newer for this h/w revision -- would the new 2.10 work on A3?

Main reason I want to upgrade is because I've started to add more 802.11N devices and I don't think I'm getting max range or speeds.

So any issue with me going to the latest 2.10 firmware?

V2.10 is for Rev B units only. The latest version for Rev A is v1.35 which can be downloaded directly from the main web page. You should troubleshoot your concern about spees and range first before upgrading FW. Upgrading might not do anything.

Thanks!  I don't see much in the way of fixes since 1.21 which would help so I agree that I should probably try other things first.

Is the /status/wireless.shtml admin page a good indicator of the 'rate' that wireless devices are seeing?

For instance, the main thing which has prompted this investigation is that my new iPad mini is not showing on that page as running at 802.11n -- it shows up as 802.11g even though I have the router setup to use G & N.

It currently shows 802.11g and a rate of 48Mbps but that obviously fluctuates.  I just have never seen triple digits the odd time I do see an 802.11n in there.

Now I did notice my signal strength is usually 40-60% so maybe that's part of the issue?

...but maybe that screen is not a good indicator.

I've read some of your other posts on recommended settings and those haven't seem to help.

Some of my settings:

-Best transmission rate
-Auto Channel Scan
-Auto 20/40 for Channel Width
-WPA2 only
-WMM disabled
-Extra protection disable
-Short GI enabled (I have tried disabling)
-WISH disabled
-WiFI protected disabled

Any other thoughts?

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.

Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

@imbittersweet - If your going to put links into your posts, why not make them clickable by using the Link button on the tool bar, 2nd row down, 3rd button in from the left.  ;)

I'm using Mixed G and N.  I was just standing right beside the router with my iphone and the status screen on the Dlink reported 100% signal but the rate never went above 65Mbps.  That's not bad but I just thought I'd be ablet to get 150Mbps from the DIR-655.  Is my expectation unrealstic?  It does say the iphone is connected using 802.11N.

Made no difference

I used inSSDer and tried a few different channels but again no change to the rate.

Using WPA Personal with WPA/AES.

Yes but don't think that was impacting my test.

Yes. I've attached a photo from InSSIDer.  BAILS2 is my wifi router.

Done.  No change.

Done, Done, Done and Done.  No Change.

Ok so I think this answers my question of the sort of rate I can expect - 270Mbps.  This is NOT from my router, it's a post I saw here:

WOW!!

Thats only if your devices supports that speed on 2.4Ghz N mode using WPA2 and AES only.

First of all you need to figure out a different channel. I see 2 others using the same channel 1 that you are trying to use. Your area seems a bit congested with other wifi.

You might try channel 2 or 11 maybe even though it's in use, signal is fairly low.

Both the iPhone 4 and iPad Mini (which I just tested there now) both support 802.11n 2.4GHz:

 iPad Mini: "•802.11a/b/g/n Wi‑Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz)"
 iPhone 4: "•802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz only)"

The auto channel selection does seem to be doing a good job changing to the best channel but I just tried some manual channel selections and it didn't make any difference -- max rate is 65Mbps.

I wonder if I should just try a factory reset and then try the latest firmware even though I see no fixes which sound like it would help.

Running out of ideas...
