DIR 655 with 2Wire
« on: November 21, 2012, 05:47:50 PM »

We've been using a 2Wire from our ISP to connect to the internet, and a Dlink DIR 655 for our wireless network. (Since the 655 has "N" speed, we can transfer large files between computers much faster than with the 2Wire.) The setup has worked fine for a few years, but recently both devices were slow. After turning them off and on a few times, unplugging, etc., without much effect, I reset both units. They're working now, but I've lost our network name and password; our Macs (and iPhone & iPad) are now using the default unlocked Dlink network. I tried to input the Dlink's default IP address, 192.168.0.1, but the address never connects.

Any suggestions on how I can access our DIR 655's IP address, so I can reinstall a password and network name? If our tech guy (now unavailable) changed the Dlink's default IP address years ago, wouldn't it it have reverted to the 192.168.0.1 when I reset?

How is the 655 connected to the 2wire modem? Using the WAN port I presume on the 655?

The 2wire has a built in router already I presume and is probably giving out a 192.168.1.# or possible a 192.168.0.# address. Or it could be conflicting with the 2wires IP address that are the same, 0.1. In this case the 655 needs to be assigned a new router IP address, something different.

It's recommended to bridge DSL modems and let the 655 handle the DSL PPPoE connection since DIR series routers have better features and work better than ISP modems for routing, however with some 2wire modems, this can't be done. However using the DMZ option on the 2wire helps:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=49338.0
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the 655s web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Sometimes if the DMZ can't be used or is not an option, or the ISP modem is going to be used has the main host router, the 655 still can't be used for a wireless AP:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Acess Points (AP)

Resetting the 655 to factory settings will change an custom router IP address back to 192.168.0.1. You should be able to log into this address from any PC using any browser to connect. The 655 does not even have to be connected to a ISP modem to do this. Just make sure the networking on the connecting PC is set up for automatic obtain IP addressing.

The 655 is connected via Port 1 to the 2Wire and via Port 2 to the computer, a Mac Pro. Those are the only two cables in the D-link.
The 2Wire is connected via Port 3 ("Local Ethernet") to the 655. It also has a line running into the wall phone jack.
You're right, the 2Wire's IP address is 192.168.1.254. The IP address itself (of our connection?) is 192.168.1.64.
Checking under System Preferences, the Network ("Ethernet 2") is set to configure automatically. It is also configured "Using DHCP".
When you talk about bridged, PPPoV and DMZ, I'm afraid you lose me. I can't get to the web page of the 655, because as I said in my first query, the address 192.168.0.1 doesn't respond.
Should I try to reset the 655 again, to see if I can get in? Both the network and the internet connection are working as originally, I'm simply trying to get into the 655's web page to set a password and change the generic name DLink for one that will identify it as our network.
Thanks for your help!

I would reset the 655 again and this time, connect to the 655 with out it being connected to the Wire. Ensure that your PC is set up for automatic network obtain IP addressing. After the reset, it should connect and you should be able to access the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.

If you can get this far, follow this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Accept when you assign the 655 a new router IP address, give it a 192.168.1.50 address instead of a 192.168.0.50 address. Everything else is the same. After you get it all configured, power off and connect to the 2wire modem. Power ON an then it should start to provide internet.
